ebay charges

If I sell a guitar on ebay for, say, £750, what are the charges I incur;  presumably ebay's own and paypal, but I'm struggling to find exact percentages.  Tell me, or point me in the right direction.

Yep, 10% on the actual listing and 3% paypal charges.  Visit http://finalfeecalc.co.uk/ to get a good idea how much you're gonna be fleeced for.

Also, if anyone bids on the item and you cancel it, they charge you 10% on the current bid amount so it gets up to £100, someone says they'll take it and pay cash on collection and you pull the listing, they'll charge you 10% of £100 so £10.

There's also a cap of £250 so if you sell an expensive guitar for, say, £3k you will only have a fee of £250 to pay.

Might be less if its during an EBay offer that they periodically put on.  Of course you'll have paypal charges too.  Didn't realise you get charged on the last bid amount if you pull the ad, or that there's a £250 cap! I've only tended to use EBay for buying rather than selling, so this thread is a helpful eye-opener for me too.

If you put in the value to this it will give you the eBay fees accurately:

    http://www.fees.ebay.co.uk/feeweb/feecalculator

The PayPal fees are then 3.4% of the total amount paid in to your PayPal account +20p (this includes whatever money they pay you for postage)

I've never been charged for pulling a listing to do an off eBay deal. Just end the listing saying item is no longer available for sale. I have however received a "warning" for offering an off-ebay deal - I suspect they root through your private messages occasionally if they detect trigger words/phrases.

I only list on eBay now when I get offers for £1 final value fees which is pretty frequently.

This for sure. Although I'm feeling like the gear scene is moving away from eBay and onto Reverb, Facebook and Forums. I'm finding it quite hard to sell some stuff on there at reasonable prices, and most sales I do make now are international.

It's not bad if you look at what auction houses charge.

I always wait to sell until I get a free / low final value fees deal.

In better economic times (and before other free ways of selling became widespread, like forums, Facebook, etc.) you could build your costs into the item cost, but there's little room for that these days.
    I think, therefore.... I... ummmm........

Ebay is a cheap way to sell especially world wide .if you sold the item to a shop you would get far little and an auction house will charge much more .Gumtree is fine for a local  choice of buyer .i always use ebay.

Have you checked your account communication settings? If you've turned-off the 'ebay can email me with offers, etc...' tab, you might be missing-out.

I think the final nail in the coffin for eBay came when they started including postage in the chargeable total .

i can see why they did it, as people could avoid fees by selling the item for 99p but charge 100 quid for postage, but there were better solutions they could have implemented.
