Does anyone else have a problem with buying stuff that must be 'used within 3 weeks of opening' (or whatever), but you only ever use a few spoonfuls in that time ?  I've just had to chuck a nearly full jar of English mustard, another of German mustard and there's loads of other things in there too that are almost full.  It's the same with spices.  Pain in the arse !

I made my way to the back of the tinned food cupboard the other day, threw away 8 tins/jars of stuff with the oldest being an unopened jar of mustard from 2013. I hate mustard so it wasn't a massive loss.

  • some dates on jar/tinned food are there to indicate quality as in the makers cannot guarantee it will taste as intended if consumed past that date, it will still be perfectly safe to eat.

I have no idea when my mustards expire. I just look at them and judge whether they've gone off.  Same with spices, they don't go off, just lose their potency.

Anything that isn't meat or dairy usually only has a "best before", which is a quality thing, not a safety thing.

I'm not worried about the safety aspect.  Who wants to cook / eat stuff that's tastes stale etc though ?

I'm just moaning about the waste.  E.g.  I'll often buy an ingredient because I need two teaspoons of it, but can only get a '50 teaspoon' jar.

My wife is obsessed with sell by dates.  I'd say 20% of the food we buy ends up in the bin because of sell by dates.
I've argued the toss for years.  I just let her get on with it now....   not worth the argument.

If it's mustard then it'll probably be good for a few more years.

Just double check it's a best before date and not a use by date.

Yeah, but mustard doesn't go off, assuming you get through a jar within 3 years or so!

Edit: AND that 80% goes well past its 'use by' date.

What I'm getting at is that recipes call for, I dunno, 'two tablespoons of creme fraiche', then in three weeks time you have to throw out a tub of creme fraiche that is still 90% full because you're not cooking with crreme fraiche ever other meal.

I don't know what the solution is.  I don't know why I posted this actually because there is no solution short of 'don't cook things that have ingredients you don't use regularly'.

I don't always remember to but if MrsTheWeary opens a jar she will write the date on it with a sharpie.

Make soup. You just put in all the stuff that is going to go mouldy in a saucepan with some veg and blend it. That's work lunches sorted as long as they have a microwave.

I got given some cake, it was in the fridge for three weeks.  The fridge is empty apart from that cake and some cheese.  I ate the cake one night, I didn't get sick.  Stuff like jam, mustard, pesto or marmite I just eat out of the jar, it lasts three days if I'm not hungry.  I often run out of eggs.  I don't really cook much at all.  No point, tomatoes and bananas are rotten in this country and the growing season for herbs is about three millimetres, so I choose to smoke and drink a lot instead because ale is something that actually does taste good.
