There is a profound connection and it's very ancient
absolutely, may day celebrations were much more earthy, lots of fertility things going on, and a fair bit of fertlising by the young folk. As I said, these continued well into the victorian era, when they tried to clean it up.
Victorian spoil - sports ..........I was hoping to get my Mojo working on the village green later today amidst young fair maidens

I thought that Morris dancing was rooted in music brought over by the hippies from Mali and Mauretania at the time of the Moors' occupation of southern Europe, which hardly qualifies as pagan.

May Day certainly goes back a long way, predates Morris dancing, and could qualify as pagan, although what we see now is mainly Victorian twaddle.

  • There are a freaky troupe of Morris dancers that i saw a few years back. About 20 of them, mostly dressed like 'Papa Lazaru' from the League of Gentlemen. Fully blacked- up make up, and looked well freaky.
They were drinking beer outside a small village pub in the sticks.

Its probably mostly died out now, but this is Devon im talking about. People still wear corded flares and use payphones here.

them's border morris, which is quite a bit different from the cotswold style (which is the hanky and bells brigade), much more fun.

EDIT: and I don't like the perjoratve tone used about corded flares there either. They will make a comeback.

You seem to know alot about types of Morris dancers. Are you 'Border' or 'Cotswold'?

..and sorry to disrespect your wardrobe like that pops.

Coincidentally, a few doors down from where I live, is a house with a blue plaque commemorating William Kimber, who revived morris dancing

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Kimber

and he is buried round the corner - in the same church as CS Lewis

Wasn't he the shoot em up bookie in Peaky Blinders as well? Busy man
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

My old mate Giz from work (so called because he looked like Kenny Everett's Gizzard Puke) was in a heavy metal morris dancing team. They wore tartan bondage trousers and leather jackets and did routines to classic metal songs.

The May Fayre in London was held around shepherds market, which still hosts brothels to this day. It is why that part of London is called Mayfair
