Buying kit without boxes...

What's Hot
hotpickupshotpickups Frets: 1823
Not sure what section to put this into but in this case I'm referring to fxs.

When you guys buy used kit more likely it being fairly new i.e. 1 year old. Do you expect to see the seller having the box it came in still? Being a pessimistic or paranoid kind of guy I sometimes feel these types of sales could be 'hot' gear  if they aren't with their boxes.  Is it only me who fears that? I know I keep all boxes for my gear if they came with them when I bought them.

No. People throw boxes away. They don't want their small houses and flats to be filled with useless cardboard.

I tend to keep all boxes because I know that the stuff that came in them is going to lose it's "fairy dust" and become a piece of s**t that I'm going to sell to someone else eventually....

    Depends what it is.

A guitar, no. (you keep the case obviously)
    An Amp, no.
    A Cab, no.
    Cables. no.

    Chase Bliss pedal, yes.

I keep boxes - it helps when I have a shuffle round and can grab which ever pedal I want easily without having to check each and every pedal. Just a glance at the box is quicker than having to look at each pedal to make sure it's the one I want. Also if/when a pedal gets shifted on there's a box to use.

I keep all the boxes. Good for storage, repair/returns, resell.
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

I've hardly got room for all my gear let alone the boxes.

I keep boxes for fx. Makes posting easier for 1. Also fx that only get used occasionally stay cleaner.

  • All my pedal boxes fit inside my amp boxes and live in the loft. It's a pain in the arse selling an amp without a box anyway.

  • Yep I keep em, but I seem to keep all boxes for anything of value, then when you move out everything back in boxes it makes it seem like you've won that big prize on the gadget show when you get to the other end!

Ok so this thread has only attracted all the OCD box-keepers and is giving the OP a completely misleading impression!

    I keep all boxes too.

I have a microwaved sized box full of boxes/jiffy bags/ bubblewarp. I'll keep as many as I can keep in that space. Don't have storage for any more.

80% of things I buy second hand don't come with an original box or stickers or owt. Doesn't bother me.

I tend to keep one box for each size of "thing" I've got (eg cabs/amps/guitars/big pedals/small pedals) so I've got an option for shipping if I sell. That's about as far as it goes, though.

If it's something expensive like an Eventide pedal, I'll hang on to the box 'cos it makes it a bit easier to move on.

Boxes don't normally sound half as good as whatever was in them.
