That doesn't really solve the problem though - just defers it to a "later date"!
The machine is currently sat in my Apple Store checkout bag.
Drive the Mac to another FBer's house that has fast broadband, download, go back home.
Quite possibly still faster.
Given the the download time for me is about 2.5 days, I think I could travel quite a distance and still find that it's the faster option.
Still, bit of a pita.
I'd hoped that a seller might try to make it slightly easier for a customer to buy their products. Currently talking to Apple support ...

Disclaimer: I have never tried this! Other fast food chains are available (but may not offer free wi-fi).
I know that’s of no help whatsoever, I just felt like sharing.

I opted for imac from John Lewis 2 year warranty interest-free.
won't solve the download issue which is probably going to take 3 days based on our old connection which was similar but you can start and stop it and unless you really need all the dumb loops then it will be a lot less.
- It hasn't been updated in ages >> Fair point, but so what if it'll do what I need it to do.
- The processor is underpowered >> But if its powerful enough, that's not an issue.
- The graphics are underpowered >> It's not going to be a games machine.
- It's not easily upgradeable >> I'd not be looking at Macs if upgrading was a requirement. 8Gb/1Tb is fine.
- You don't get a monitor >> Good, I don't need one.
I really just want a small (that's a requirement) OSX (ditto) box . I've got monitors a-plenty, and a BT Apple keyboard & mouse that aren't being used for anything else.An iMac with a 27" screen (that's a requirement) is almost 3x the cost of the Mac Mini.
I've considered running OSX under an emulator on a small box WinPC but, tbh, the cost is little different, and I'd always have the issues with peripherals and the emulation layer.
So .... Mac Mini it is.
Thanks. Their support eventually suggested that might be an option. Waiting for a call back to confirm. Else I'll be popping down the road to a mate's place and borrowing his 300Mbps fibre.
But I still object to having to do that just because Apple decree that everyone should have an internet connection capable of downloading 60Gb in less time than their update cycle.

They can and will if I buy an iMac, or a MacBook. But not a Mac Mini.
So my Apple shopping bag is now emptied.
Sometimes, if something seems to be too hard, perhaps there's a reason.
Perhaps that's a reason.
