Oh, and there are computer games to figure in - if he plays computer games they can sit in the 50GB to 100GB range... replace a dead hard drive with a steam library on it and you might hit 200GB in a day several days in a row.

We switched from BT infinity to Plusnet unlimited 80Mb fibre and saved a fair bit.
A few years ago we had BT with a 5GB monthly limit. We got a smart TV and Now TV box, and thought we were badass because us and the neighbours would connect to each others BT wi-fi to watch films without touching our allowance.
When you actually look at where the traffic is coming from and what it is, it's often very surprising, and not what you expect. Unless you have teenage boys in the house, in which case it's exactly what you expect.
