I see so many relics where I am left wondering, 'in real life, just how would that have happened???'
Turning to this one, on the other hand, there have been so many genuinely old guitars I've seen and handled that have looked just like this.
In all honesty the knife always feels like a rather crude way to do this... but it seems to work for me. it always starts off looking proper hokey though

Marc has said he has changed the wind slightly to get a better balance in the set, but even if he had copied a 50's one exactly i wouldn't expect his to sound exactly like another 50's one... just the one he copied.
I also buffed out an 81 refin this weekend... in a nice vintage black. Its been a full on Custom weekend

here are 3 guards.. the 50's archtop, an off the shelf custom guard, and one i have made in the middle
You can see the man difference between the old and modern material is the middle black layer... can't do much about that
I used a router to rough the bevel in, but that looked pretty much identical to the one on the bottom. I hand scraped the bevel on the middle one... getting much closer.
The old guard's bevel is actually slightly concave so i think i need to finish off with a curved scraper
