I've also seen one repaired by tying a couple of pieces of a G string round it and twisting them in the manner of an old cable wrap, but that would need tools to loosen the front nut as well or they couldn't have been got between the machinehead and the headstock. Even that indented the headstock slightly, although it was hardly noticeable. It may have been what the owner had to do to get through a gig though, if he didn't have a spare guitar.
