Our drummer and I wrote a fairly full-on rock song today, and I just put a solo to it which doesn't have any widdly-widdly in it.

I think I'm maturing, and I'm not sure how I feel about that...

Well, I think it's tasteful, at least. Here you go:

The offending solo starts at about 2:14. There's no bass on it, 'cos our bassist likes us to leave him a blank canvas.

I just listened to that. I know it's all personal taste etc. but for me the solo has a confidence and control about it that speaks massively more about the competence of the guitarist (obviously you) than the safety/smokescreen net that widdly repetition can sometimes be. Very, very good stuff.

I always get the feeling that if I haven't put something technically challenging into it, I've cheated or just been lazy. This is probably the first time when I've thought, "That'll do, Donkey. That'll do."

I'm also pretty pleased with the tones - all the guitars on there were done with the Eleven Rack, with no EQ and only a quick attempt at setting the levels (it's only a demo for the rest of the band to work from) then a bit of compression on the master. There's a couple of bits where things get a bit muddy (like the first note of the second part of the solo), but other than that it's surprisingly clear.

Yep, I thought that was a tasteful solo, some nice note choices there and the way you let the note hang into feedback was good. Knowing when to leave space in your solo's is an art that is lost on many players nowadays.

I don't claim to be an expert but I reckon some of the licks could be tighter, I felt the timing ran a little on some bits. Other than that, it was a great solo, developed well and very satisfying to the listener.

Quite correct - I felt like they were running a little at the time, but listening back I actually quite liked the "relaxed" effect. It was only a jam through the track, though, so my chances of managing to reproduce it are precisely zero

I want to be the master of relaxed soloing. I try to place notes so far from the beats that nobody knows where they were supposed to be in the first place.
