I really want a nice parlour size acoustic. Tried an Ibanez and a Tanglewood but just saw this on the bay! You may notice a bloody great hole in the side (for personal monitoring says the seller!). Is this an issue structurally and could it be ‘capped’ with a nice piece of wood?

Or, as I suspect, is it a ‘bargepole’ scenario????

  • Theres a homeless busker in Oxford who plays a guitar with various holes in it. Hes not bad, but I'd not buy his guitar off him... same goes for this.

The inner edge of the bloody great hole looks a little bit ragged. This leads me to wonder whether the back and sides of the guitar are laminate. I see little point in spending money to make good if the basic instrument is nothing special.

Might be worth consulting Andy Evans directly at Pendragon Guitars.

Took your advice and the seller accepted! £167 with postage for a luthier made acoustic (albeit with an extra sound hole!) - fingers crossed!

Tried emailing Andy but it bounced back. Let’s hope I haven’t bought an expensive ornament!

It it comes with an SKB rigid foam case and they seem to be £90 new so that makes me feel a bit better!!!

I had a faith electro acoustic once, and the preamp had failed, I took it out of the side, and I actually really like hearing the sound come out of that hole while playing. I replaced it, but I never use it plugged in, and will probably take it out again to be honest. I was really quite surprised, and unless this was a freak one off, I do wonder why more guitars don't have a 'sound hole' that is pointing up at you like that? Maybe it takes sound that would usually come out the front.. idk

  • I have just bought a Martinez nylon with a sound port and must say greatly impressed with the sound I hear from it whilst playing https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=Martinez+MSCC-14&_sacat=0

  • It arrived today!!!!!

And i I bloody love it! ‘Tis tiny but sounds sweet as!

Next question from me is about the wood! Can anyone tell me from the pics below of the inside of the guitar if it is solid wood back and sides? From the outside, it looks very ‘open grain’.

I don't think you can tell from a surface view whether the back/sides are solid or laminate, you'd need to see a cross section ( can you tell by looking at the top sound hole?) - back and sides would normally be the same, i.e. if solid both would be.
