  • I've always been a fan of rock, heavy metal and blues and I'm looking for a new hobby that will occupy my time now I'm retired. It has to be something I can do at home and is not weather dependent.  I already do rock climbing and mountain biking but at 71 I'm looking for something a little more sedate. I consider that it's never too late to learn.  In the dim and distant past I could play a few chords on an acoustic but it never really seemed to be satisfactory so I thought I would buy an electric guitar and amp. Which leads to the advice I am seeking.  I have seen starter kits for around about £100.  Are they worthwhile or a waste of money?  I'm never going to be a David Gilmore but hey ho we all have to start somewhere.

  • Hi.  I'm Al, short for Alan.  I'm retired and thinking about getting an electric guitar to give me something to do at home that is not weather dependent.  I live near Cheltenham in the Cotswolds, a very nice part of the world. I'm 71 but still an active rock climber and mountain biker but as I'm slowing down a bit I need something a little more sedate. I have always liked to listen to Blues and heavy rock.  Think Muddy Waters, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple etc. In the dim distant past I could string together a few chords on an acoustic but it never really satisfied me.

  • Hi, I'm Andy and have just found this forum.

Q1:  Where did you username come from? well this question removes all the mystery! It's the name of first track from The Manic Street Preachers debut Album, and also fits well with my liking for Guns N' Roses.

Q2:  Where in the world/country are you? Manchester, UK

Q3:  What's your main musical ambition?
To be a better guitarist and learn more full songs.

Q4:  Your "best" bit of gear - just the one?
Not my latest axe, but my faithful 2005 USA Tele Standard that I've owned for about 10 years

Q5:  Your #1 ever track - again, just the one? Impossible to answer, but logically it would have to be Tribute (Tenacious D)

Hi, My name is Tim I am 66 years old and just learning to play.

My first guitar was a Christmas present from my parents 50 years ago a used Stratocaster I never learned to play at any level, sold it when I was around 19 to a guy who played in a band. Now last year Just before Christmas I came across my wife's acoustic guitar in the loft a EKO Texan acoustic must be 60 years old. Local guitar shop restrung it and tuned it for me, I played around with it for a couple of weeks and I was hooked. I need to learn to play it. I booked a weekly one hour session with a tutor and I am loving it, I practice about one hour each day I am making very slow progress but never the less I am progressing. My wife wanted to get me a guitar for Christmas I chose a Tanglewood TSB58 at my local music centre again I am loving it.

Q1:  Where did you username come from? Showing my age with this answer, When I was around 10 -12 years old I would collect scrap wood pieces at a local factory that made paint brushes. I would cut this wood into small pieces for fire wood (starting the coal fire in the home) and sell the wood to local homes for a shilling a bundle. When a customer would ask the price I would say a Bob will do please, this has stayed with me as a nickname Bobwill.

Q2:  Where in the world/country are you? I reside in the Midlands UK

Q3:  What's your main musical ambition? Just to be able play a guitar

Q4:  Your "best" bit of gear - just the one? I have just one piece of gear a Tanglewood TSB58

Q5:  Your #1 ever track - again, just the one? This is difficult to pick just one track but it will probably be something with Mark Knopfler playing
