Kids Toys

What's Hot
God there half isn't some crap out there. Was looking for a bike/trike thing for the nipper, didn't want to spend much because obviously she's growing and found something for £50. Fair enough I thought.

Plastic shit wheels and bad fixings that I know are going to break easily. Total craddock!

Been there done that with a trike I bought my little boy that's a PoS.

Strider Balance bikes are really good.

If I'm getting a scooter I'll always pay the extra and get a Micro. You can look online and see the pictures of kids with their teeth smashed out from where the wheels let go on the shitty cheap ones.

I ended up buying a SH Isla as a proper bike for my girls as the cheap ones were all total crap.

There are companies which rent Frog bikes and swap them for free once the kid grows out of them.

We bought stuff secondhand dirt cheap. I also pulled a great plastic toy tractor out of a skip. It was bust but my dad being an engineer fixed it.

    Yup. We were cheapskates.

I expect a quality product regardless of the price-bracket.

  • Micro scooters are brilliant.

Puky Balance bikes- decent bearings and solid wheels. Replacing the inner on a child's bike is a pain.

Isla bikes are ridiculously expensive, but hold their value incredibly well and are worth the money.

It's worth Gumtree hunting for these things- people buy them with the best intentions, the kids isn't interested etc... You get an almost new thing for not much money.

I'd expect something that at the very least wasn't a child's death trap.
I think that's why we have safety standards.

  • She seems happy enough with it btw. It's just my adult brain looking at it and going "wtf did I pay for?"

Did think about 2nd hand, but in current climate thought it best not to.

ditto - My daughter (now 18) never had a new bike until about 14/15 when it was a full size version that would last a few years and beyond - Nearly always someone moving on a second hand, but not used a lot, bike for next to nothing

I bought a rusty but basically decent bike from a boot fair for my daughter. Stripped all the old paint off, spent ages rubbing it down, sprayed it Barbie pink, stuck on holographic stars, clear lacquered it, polished all the chrome, put new tyres on it. I proudly unveiled it on Xmas morning.

She took one look at it and said she didn’t like it.

Girls are basically un-pleasable little shits.

Honestly thought this was going to be a feel good tale of Hobbiton proportions, but then it went all Sinister and Despicable Me.

    Young kids don't understand tact.

You have to learn to not be offended if you buy them a present and they straight out say they don't like it.

    I don't think it's a boy or girl thing.

Ok it’s a fair cop guv, that post did make it sound like I don’t like her. To be fair, she was a difficult kid and a complete nightmare as a teenager and cost her mum and me no end of angst, heartbreak and not an inconsiderable amount of money. I’m not going into details here but she narrowly avoided getting arrested for fraud.... it was only discovered when the bank bounced my ex’s mortgage payments. They could’ve lost the family home.

She’s now 25 and working as a carer in a residential home for people with long term mental problems. She’s hardworking, in a longterm settled relationship and has turned into a thoroughly decent person.

And I’ve always loved her to bits.

I kinda guessed.  ;) Just wanted to put things straight though.

As somebody said to me once, raising kids is the most dangerous thing you can do without needing a licence.  :)
