    REVISITED 3 YEARS ON:

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
The first guitar I actually owned was a Kent (and it was), a cheap £25 acoustic from a junk shop. I must have been keen because it didn't put me off from learning.

    Obviously no change there!

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
I would burn with it while I tried to decide between the Gretsch Duo Jet and the Gibson CS336.

Still got both but it's got to be the Duo Jet.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    It's a bass - my 1973 Fender Precision.

Still have it, still the oldest.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
A 5E3 (Tweed Deluxe) style amp - if you are selling one, PM me!

I built one from a kit plus the cab/speaker of someone else's disastrous build. Used it a fair bit at jams and small gigs. It does its thing and does it well. Just about to fit an HT fuse in place of the Standby switch, and ordered an Eminence Legend 1258 speaker to replace the Peavey Sheffield 1230 that came with the cab.

Thinking of getting another pair of 6V6 valves to put in my Princeton Reverb.

5: What strings do you use?
Ernie Ball Slinkies. The gauge varies a bit according to the guitar.

After a a year or so with GHS Nickel Rockers I am now enjoying Elixir Optiweb 10s.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
    Most of it.

A track I built up for a friend to demo his song. The lead tone stinks, but that I recorded it before the Revival Drive existed!

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Looking at my watch, maybe doing vocal warm-ups.

    And tuning up. Again.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Getting changed back into my street clothes.

    No change there.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Bad things don't often happen to me, least of all on stage.

    Still nothing terrible to report.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Get a decent valve amp as soon as you can afford one.

I'd still say the same thing.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
Hokada Classical - that and the accompanying classical guitar lessons lasted a couple of months before a mexi strat and Normal Guitar Lessons for Normal People.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
    Gibson ES-335

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    Mid 90s mexi Squier Strat

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
Literally nothing on the radar for the next few years TBH - unless something important breaks. Everything except the really cherished stuff is up for sale.

5: What strings do you use?
D'add 10's on electric, D'add phosphor bronze 12's on acoustic

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Probably used less reverb and made the vocal louder.

7: What are you doing five minutes

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
My very first guitar was a nylon strung Spanish model, bought for £19.20 by my mum in Southport, January 1980.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
That's a tough one. Probably my Patrick Eggle LA Pro.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    1985 Ibanez Roadstar

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
I could do with a decent recording pre-amp and I'll be asking Fretboarders for any advice they can give. I currently have a Vox Tonelab SE so it's time I moved into the modern age!

5: What strings do you use?
    Ernie Ball Regular Slinky

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Don't discard the first take so quickly.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Haven't played a gig in years but, back in the days when London had venues like the Bull and Gate, I'd probably be checking my tuning for the 20th time.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Getting our gear out of the way so that the next band could set up.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
I had a guitar that didn't have a strap lock and so it was just the end of the strap slotted over the strap button. We were doing a song that ended with the tempo gradually getting slower and the volume reducing, whilst our singer did the same, holding on some long notes for a rapt audience Right at the very end, strap and guitar become detached from each other, resulting in me loudly exclaiming "Sh*t" whilst trying to prevent my instrument from going south. I can still hear the derisive laughter now...

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Don't get caught up in trying to imitate others, concentrate on being you.

    Martin D28 37 Authentic

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?

My faux-gravelly singing in my first CD. I find it too cringe to listen to (or promote) nowadays.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?

Texting my wife to say how I feel guilty about leaving her to deal with the kids while I’m out gadding about playing

    8: ...And five minutes after?

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?

    Mustang Sally, I’d say.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

Don’t waste time learning what you think you ought to, just learn to play what you like and follow your tastes. There’s so much pressure to be a musical encyclopaedia these days. Chances are your heroes weren’t.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

Aside from using my brother's, the first one I actually bought with my own actual money was an Ibanez whose model I can't remember. It was really nice, but the neck was a touch wide for my liking and I absolutely hated its floating tremolo (though I now want another guitar with one, of course).

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?

Probably my Epiphone Les Paul. I bought it about a year after I moved to the UK and it's the one I play the most.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?

    That Les Paul.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?

I was eyeing off one of those Squier Starcasters a month or two ago. In the end I bought something else, but I'd still really love to have a go on one.

5: What strings do you use?

Usually standard D'Addario's, but I'm experimenting with different gauges at the moment and currently playing RotoSound 10s, light top heavy bottom (10, 13, 17, 30, 42, 52). I don't like how floppy the top strings go on standards, especially when drop-tuning, and so far I'm really happy with these ones.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?

    To have it exist

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?

My last gig? Downing a pint of cider.

    8: ...And five minutes after?

Wishing I hadn't downed that pint of cider as I messed up one of the songs.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?

Completely messing up the bassline to song mentioned in Q8.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

Practice practice practice. And then practice some more. And then, when you're done, trying practicing.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
A 3/4 size nylon string acoustic was loaned by a cousin. My first purchased one was an encore electric purchased second hand.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
Black Stratocaster. Purchased as a teenager in 1994 (I think), Mexican, I still love it.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
Probably the encore that resides under my bed (it’s a dreadful guitar, but I can’t bear to part with it).

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
Not sure, quite content but maybe a better amp or a semi-hollow.

5: What strings do you use?
Regular Slinky on electrics, Elixir nanoweb on acoustic.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?

    8: ...And five minutes after?
    Beer

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Cut my finger at a school gig and managed to spray blood across guitar. It was actually quite a rock moment.

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
A Samick classical nylon for £90. Year: 1997. I remember going to my first guitar lesson and teacher at the time telling me it had dreadful buzzing at the nut and to take it back. I was gutted to discover my new instrument was damaged - I was unable to return it (too self-conscious to admit to my folks it had an issue) nonetheless it didn't hold me back. Have it to this day with it's buzzy nut.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
    My telecaster.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
A 1950's random old acoustic I got from a friends Grandma. Plays terrible, but sounds great!

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
A cabinet for a lonely head. I'm trying to reduce gear... (he says..)

5: What strings do you use?
10s... D'Addario... and some Curt Mangans. Looking at moving to 9s.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
    Better mics.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Out of practice... but probably trying to quell anxiety.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Reviewing how it went in my head?

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
When I was 14 and got my first pedal - a wah. Didn't know how it worked. Arrived in the post the day of a gig... got my brother to bring it along to use. Just in time to start our set I was so excited to unleash my inner-wah. Couldn't get it turned on and was so distracted I dropped the ball on our opening song.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Learn that fretboard (notes) think in notes rather than fret no.s --- so much falls together afterward... and it makes reading music a lot more approachable, in addition to relating/understanding musicians who play other instruments.

Playing in front of 1000 hostile students with another teacher, we missed the timing playing to a drum machine and had to restart. It felt like a riot was going to start! It all ended well with so many of them singing along to Merry Christmas by Slade, you couldn't hear the bass!

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Skills learned on the playstation are not going to be as useful long term as the guitar!

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
Played a classical guitar that was in the family. After almost a year I got a cream Japanese strat copy... Saiko or something, in 1996 or 97.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
Gibson Les Paul Standard, cherry sunburst, 1996.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
No idea how old some of the guitars are... could be the strat copy, could be an Admira classical I got 4th hand in 2005.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
Nothing, I only really play the classical these days

5: What strings do you use?
    Usually an E, A, D, G, B and E

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Make the guitar louder and more to the fore, drop the fucking bouncy dance drums.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Trying not to look like I'm bricking myself.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
On a high, bouncing around trying to shag something

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
    Nobody turned up

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
don't break your little finger when you're drunk. Learn some theory.
