  • A fine pair for sure. I have a real soft spot for my LP Standard, it took a while to find a good one, but mine really is pretty good. I've upgraded the pickups and wiring, then I had Feline give it it a proper setup, all of which transformed it into the guitar it always had the potential to be. That said, my Feline Lion is on another level when it comes to build quality and playability.

I did exactly the same with my Standard too mate, although Jon did all the work. New pickups and harness, plus some Faber bits and a fettle. Plays amazingly well now, but it was always a great LP to start with. The Lion is just the nuts, so well balanced and sounds amazing even when playing unplugged. My R8 may end up in the classifieds soon!

Anyone owned a dud Feline? I've had 3 Felines and they've all been great. Couldn't say that about Gibsons.

I doubt Jon would let a dud Feline out of the workshop, can't say the same for Gibson but the scale is vastly different too. Clearly Feline make a better mousetrap all things considered. (There's a pun there somewhere! )

I was basing my opinion on the 3 I have (2 Gibson's and a Lion), and I have to say the Feline is on the whole the better guitar, but with some choice upgrades and an amazing set up my Standard is still nearly as good. It's fine margins though really, not night and day. The Feline is the one in my lounge though and it hasn't left since it arrived. YMMV and all that!

So when you buy a gibson L.P standard you buy the body , and logo.
You then replace tailpeice ,wiring harness, pick up selector, pick ups ,tuners, bone nut , its only the body away from becoming triggers broom =) ( i know you didnt do all of that on yours but some people do )

I think Gibson make a lot of great guitars.
However they sometimes need a bit of work or help to release the full potential.
That is what we spend much of our time at Feline doing, and we appreciate people entrusting their guitars to us to do just that.
It is pretty impossible financially for big companies making factory made guitars to have a skilled tech labour for too long over any one guitar.
However having a good tech bring out the bet (or doing it yourself if you have those skills) releases the potential of a guitar.

Our own guitars are simply a result of us trying to make a guitar with a few sensible upgrades/mods that we feel make a difference and with all those little niggles already ironed out.

We appreciate the love and appreciation, but as I said we are also here to help bring out the best in all brands of guitars.
@Boromedic had his Gibson worked on by us, and I suspect both guitars will have similar-ish set-ups, and a few of the mods we did on the Gibson are things we do on our builds which will bring the two even closer yet he will probably enjoy the slight differences between the two, as both will have something unique going on.

Many guitars have a re-sale value. Some you'll never want to sell.

    Had...
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

Tis a fair point! I replaced a fair few bits, but wouldn't have done if the underlying guitar was terrible. The pickups and harness were swapped as I wanted lower output and 50s wiring, otherwise they'd have been left tbh. So I replaced the lot in the end, it is a 21 year old guitar so don't feel it wasn't worth it.

It's just enhanced it for me, but others probably wouldn't have bothered. The Feline is still special though regardless. Different flavours of pizza topping I guess!

Very true Jon, very true! They both sound great but are unique enough to warrant the love. It's the R8 that's now surplus to requirements, which I never thought would happen.
