Do you mean a Strat-size humbucker, or a full-size one?

  • If full size, a Duncan jazz is really good for a warm neck tone and can indeed do jazz (and a lot more besides - it's excellent for smooth lead tones).

If single coil size, I have no idea. You're welcome. :)

  • A friend of mine had one in the neck position of his Tele - it was just a generally good sounding pickup in that guitar it was in there for 15-20 years.

It was a zebra coiled one, I’ll ask if he still has it and if he’d sell it.

I'd say the Seymour Duncan Jazz was bright and clear and clean, not warm.

    That's the one.

Blimey, definitely warm to me! Any warmer and it would be into dull territory.

Just goes to show how we're all different. I use the tone control on my guitar as well, so if you're locked at 10 all the time you might miss how it can be warm, but still have enough clarity - I assume that's why they call it the "jazz".

I concur, I've been reading this thread scratching my head.

A Jazz is about as bright as neck humbuckers get.

Really strange to read this, I found mine really warm on a strat type guitar - I would roll the tone down when I want a warm tone but even maxed out, with any kind of drive I found it fairly dull - any more so and it would be a pretty rubbish pickup (maybe it is to many?).

Could it be mine was wired incorrectly perhaps? It had a coil split, and when split it was very thin.

Tone rolled down half way it made a lovely jazzy tone, maxed out it was less bright than, for example, my friend's slash pickup in the neck.

    250k pots?

I love the SD Jazz humbucker. For what it's worth, I'd call it warm and bright. :#

Talking about sound is "like dancing about architecture" and all that.

Alegree hasn't said, but he has a new range of PAF-style humbuckers in whatever magnet/dc resistance you wish for a very reasonable price (ie cheap!)

@geminitiger Maybe ask him what he would recommend?

  • Don't forget the blue Lace Sensors. Cheap second hand and a straight drop-in.

Talking about sound is "like dancing about architecture" and all that.

    That's a very good point.

There is a lot of adjectives in audio that are very metaphoric and seem to be used by different people to mean just about every variation possible.

I thought "warm" was one of the more clear cut ones but maybe not. In most cases I've heard it being used to mean fewer high frequencies and/or more low frequencies.

So to me it's impossible for something to be warm and bright, they're the opposite.

Or when someone said "warm without getting in to dull territory" - warm and dull (or more commonly dark) mean the same thing, just whether it's being seen as a pro or a con.
