  • When you say "Tonight, this arrived..." I think what that means is that people who have fallen on hard times and can no longer care for their sick and disabled guitars come and leave them on your doorstep once darkness has fallen. You open your front door and there's yet another battered old hardcase on the steps. You open it up and inside lies the helpless instrument with a handscrawled, tear-stained note on it.
"His name is Ibby. He likes to be played with before he goes to bed at night, and if you could rub a little lemon oil on his neck every now and then, he'd be ever so grateful. Gawd bless you Sir!"

My brother has a super clean one from 83. The Pro Rocker is a pretty awful design. Would something like a Vega Trem be a more practical refit? Or is this it all about an original restoration?

    Indeed, it is.

Nothing else fits the stock vibrato cavity - not even the Ibanez Hard Rocker - without the need for some wood removal.

The pivot posts are at a non-standard spacing.

The SL model was a more expensive model in the day, certainly compared to other RS models - I sold a couple back in the day, new, but can't recall playing/selling one since

You could cover up the void with a Tele top loader ashtray bridge, or am I being too pragmatic?

I have the vibrato cavity of the red RS530 illustrated in my previous post marked up for wood removal to accommodate an Ibanez Hard Rocker vibrato. The volume of wood involved is tiny but getting at it with hand tools would be fiddly.

FYI, a correctly positioned Kahler Pro, Flyer or Fixed bridge will not cover the original pivot inserts.

Almost … except the screws of any T-style bridge would be trying to bite into fresh air and the top of the RS1000 and RS1010SL models is arched.

Schaller might have something suitable. If I can think of any other solutions, I shall add them here.

Given that a gold Kahler Pro may be a reasonable temporary/semi-permanent fix, I could live with visible threaded inserts.

Are you sure it would intonate?

Are you sure [a Kahler Pro] would intonate?
Only if the vibrato cavity were extended away from the fingerboard. (Hence, the threaded inserts not being covered.)

The arched top of the RS1010SL would necessitate either a stud-mount or a recess to accept the flat mount.

Imagine, if you will, where the back corners of the Pro Rock'r would sit above the guitar top. That is approximately where the back two screws (or studs) of a Kahler would go. The forward two fastening screws of a flat mount probably align with fresh air.

If the thread pivot inserts for the Pro Rock'r were repurposed, the height wheels for a Kahler Pro stud-mount would support the corners of the vibrato's baseplate.

Truth be told, the only substitute for an Ibanez Pro Rock'r vibrato is another Ibanez Pro Rock'r. Since my intention has always been to block the bugger off, the next best thing is an Ibanez Hard Rocker. The necessary woodwork will be hidden.

I can see me purchasing another RS model purely in order to re-deploy the Pro Rock'r...
