Before I just hand the lad my Muffroom Cloud as the only thing I have that might suit (pre-law$uit model lol) , what might a good, straightforward, flexible bass OD pedal be?

Nothing outsized, nothing that needs fancy power, nothing one-trick-wonder

ta!
Red ones are better.

    Boss ODB3.

Or the Behringer BOD 400 is a clone of it.

Tipton is a small fishing village in the borough of Sandwell.

  • Sansamp, or a clone thereof (Joyo Dr J Sparrow or Behringer BDI).

If you've got a Boss LS-2 already somewhere then any drive pedal. Use the LS-2 for a clean blend.

The Darkglass B3K is amazingly versatile despite it's metal reputation. I use mine for school warmth at low levels when I still had a big band to play in.

  • I use a Zoom B1on, it's got a sansamp sim on it, as well as a few EQ patches, prefer it to the Behringer BDI21, it's better for fine adjustment,  I assume the lastest version the Zoom B1 four is the same, bit of a faff figuring out how to use it though

Second  the Sansamp bass DI. My favourite dirt for bass is the Darkglass Duality Fuzz.

EHX Battalion Nano is a a PreAmp/OD. My best buy of 2020, a very flexible little unit with a wide variety of sounds available via its eq and gain routing.

ODB-3 doesn't really do subtle. The Ashdown Hyperdrive isn't bad. It really depends whether you're going for subtle valve drive like a dimed SVT, something more distorted than that, or all-out fuzz.

Joyo High Gain Distortion. One might think that this shouldn't work but it sounds amazing in small doses.  There are one or two youtube videos hailing this remarkable pedal for bass.

Any idea whether his is a copy of another pedal?

I just use my boss OS-2. Or, more accurately, a behringer clone I kept when I got my OS-2.

Suppose I usually use quite a mid-y, guitar-y tone for bass. Not super low frequency anyway, I like to be able to hear it.

More often than not, blending overdrive or distortion with your clean sound strikes the right balance between rip and fundamental.

  • I like both the Catalinbread SFT and the Zvex Basstortion.

I also really like a Rat when blended using my LS-2.

Yep, all about the clean blend with bass.

When I'm mixing live shows with bassisrs that use a lot of drive I like to take a clean DI before any pedals and blend it with a mic on the cab - big clean low end from the DI and all the grit from the mic.

For bass, I am a big fan of a blend knob. OD on it's own just gets lost, adding in some clean signal helps alot to retain the "bass" part. If you need a muff type sound, then go for the EHX bass muff

  • For fairly light crunch, can't recommend TC Electronic Spark (4-knob version). Can go a bit heavier too. Stacks well and is fantastic on its own. Doesn't need a blend, neither does my Aguilar ToneHammer set to pretty gritty.
