I guess the biggest comfort in a time of respiratory pandemic is that my VO2 Max is 51 at the minute, which apparently puts me at a fitness age of 20 / in the top 15% for a 39 year old man.

    Now where’s that beer...?
Congratulations. Thanks as well, I didn't think about there being ranges and tables by age. I just see the figure pop up on my watch after a run.

Made me feel good to at vo max of 49 Im in the excellent range for my age (55, almost 56) Feeling chuffed now :)
Can anyone explain how VO2 Max is calculated? I have it on my Garmin, but no idea how it's calculated and if it's accurate?

the first part no, not off the top of my head...but Im certain that when I initially looked into it, the accuracy of Garmin's calculations vs. Medical VO2 Max studies was still something around the 97% mark... basically, its better than you'd perhaps expect.

Went out to do first 10k of the year this morning. I was deliberately running within myself doing 6m km's. I was feeling good but then calf went at 9.7k :( I had a calf strain before - think I need shoes which give more support once I'm fit again. Reckon it'll be at least 4 weeks til I'm running again. Oh well, time to get the bikes out instead.

Good stuff gents. I feel your pain @ewal I have had the best part of a fortnight off due to injury but eased back in with a couple of steady 5ks this week.

C25K is going well.  Done the first couple of weeks but have been doing longer runs for the last interval.  Despite the weight I've put on I've obviously not quite lost all the conditioning I'd built up this time last year.

Looking forward to being able to 10km again but that's still a good few weeks/months off.

So after running 1-2 10ks a week for years I went down with Covid on Christmas day.  My last run was Christmas Eve and I have done a couple of walks of 4 or 5 miles but I've had a chest infection and haven't had the lungs to run.

I spoke to a nurse who said I won't do my self any damage if I run even if I have a long tail chest infection.  I'm tempted to give it a go.  How far do I run/attempt after that time?  Do I just start running and see how I feel or come with a 2 mile, 3 mile etc slow build back up?

    Sorry to hear that.

I'm not a doctor, but I'd say take it very easy for at least the first couple of runs. I can well imagine the frustration - my regular week is similar to your pre-illness schedule in terms of distance - so I can fully imagine the temptation to try to get back to normal quickly. But just look after yourself. I'd say have a few gentle outings and listen to your body.

rule 1 - listen to your body, if you feel discomfort, don’t push pass it.

Like the other guys said, aim low and listen to your body.  When I had to recover from injury last year I would go out for 2k only, because it didn’t aggravate the injury.  After a few runs I had the confidence to increase the distance by a little bit - and I just gradually built back up.

Anybody else fancy joining me in a monthly summary?

I've just done my last run in January.  I had a goal of 20k per week for the month, which I managed to do.  I've mainly done 5, 7 or 8k routes, but I also threw in a 10 and a 12.  I've done either 3 or 4 runs per week.
Pace has been easy, as I'm still trying be cautious following a knee problem in the autumn.  I've been doing around 6:10 per km
For a couple of weeks I exceeded my distance goal a little bit.  This last week I've been feeling a bit run-down, but I managed to do 20k, albeit in 4x5k runs, taking it really easy.
In total I've clocked up 97k in the month.

    Pleased :)

I think I've hit 100 miles, off 3 or 4 runs per week of 7 and a bit miles.

    My January summary:

    23.3 km / 2hrs 28 mins / 14 runs

I started from scratch (again) this month after running a couple of times in the whole of last year. Working my way up, so I am reasonably happy with this. I'm still running too fast most of the time, I think.

    Well done everyone.

    Just 30k for me.

I did manage my 2nd ever 10k, first was 4 years ago.

Also got a 5k pb since I started running again 3 months ago.

That's maybe why I also picked up a nasty calf injury and have been put of action for the last 10 days. Been over doing it I think.

I’ve had a bit of trouble with my calf in Dec and Jan so it’s been a bit frustrating.  I did 120km in Nov and broke my PB for my 5km and 10km but only managed 55km in Dec and 36km in Jan. Hoping to get back on track in February.

  • January summary

    Total distance: 49.5km
    Total runs: 8
    Highlight: 5km in 28:23

The missus managed to stub her toe and give herself a severe spiral fracture so I haven't been managing my full complement of runs this month and as a result of that plus increased beer consumption I'm also 4 lbs heaver than in November. Hoping Feb starts to get a bit better though.

  • Today was an interesting one, -17ºc. Eyelashes and hair froze. Yikes. Managed 3km before throwing in the (frozen) towel.

Managed 128k this month which I'm quite proud of.

Treated myself to a Garmin Forerunner and some new Brooks Trail shoes.
