What Are The Best Songs For Learning String Bending

What's Hot
I'm trying to find riffs and solos to practise string bends. Going from easy to more difficult.

Any suggestions? Which songs did you guys all use to learn string bending?

I'm open to any genre. I just want to play guitar...

Thanks

Jimi Hendrix - Highway Chile is good for unison bends. Iron Maiden have a few riffs, Run to the Hills, Somewhere in Time, Infinite Dreams.

If you want something challenging then the section of Freebird around the 22nd fret (e-string fretted, bending b-string repeatedly), that whole solo is great for bends and pentatonic techniques too.

Another Peter Green suggestion, “I loved Another Woman”. Lovely intro with loads of bending.

Not my video but this shows it well.....(see next post).

Country bends tend to be the most technically challenging in terms of strength and holding 2 pitches at once. Stuff like Parisienne Walkways is great to practice controlled vibrato.
One trick is to to pick a static note on the G string, say the octave, then think of My Way by Sinatra and starting from that note use the B string to bend the 5th up to the 6th and then increase the bend on the B string for as much as you can get through the first verse.  I get up to the final curtain bending form the 5 up to all the other notes then it gets impossible.

  • If you want to practice wide bends with vibrato, which I'd rate as difficult, then try Zakk Wylde/Black Label Society.

If you are a beginner to bends then I wouldn't start with a song. Instead I'd practice two semi-tone bends at different fret positions on the G string. There are two reasons for this. You've got a convenient note two frets down on the B string which you can use as pitch reference. (bending at the 7th on the G string takes the D note up to E, which is conveniently at the 5th fret on the B string). Secondly, you can learn how to deal with tensions along the string. It's a lot easier to bend at the 12th fret than it is at the 5th, or worse 3rd fret.

For building finger strength, Are You Gonna Go My Way.  The main riff involves full tone bends at the 2nd and 5th frets on the G string; that’ll toughen you up.

Just reminded me of a riff in GnRs Civil War, similar whole bends around the 2nd/3rd frets, no skin left on your fingertips after practising that one for a while.

The first one my guitar teacher taught me was the solo to Californication by Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

It's got a variety of bends - stop, return, unison - but it is pretty simple and nice and slow.
