Who is dreading the commute into work once lockdown is over?

I hated commuting, for me it was like selling part of my life essence - a waste of time, and often physically hard work, driving or being a train passenger for 2-3 hours on top of a job is a lot of effort.

Yep, dreading it. 35 miles of single lane A roads full of HGVs and idiot overtakers, 1 hour there and 1 hour back and feeling tired all week long. I hate it. Not looking forward to it at all.

Mine is only 20 minutes by car, I'll often go by motorbike just to mix it up a bit, and I might try cycling though it is 19 miles.
I'm actually looking forward to getting back amongst people, so the short commute is a small price to pay.

I was dressed at 8:55 am this morning, could a helicopter cover the 25 miles to the office in 5 minutes? Anyone got a helicopter?

I'm now part time and we have been told there will be more flexible ( ie home) working in the future. I suspect that will slip and by this time next year we will all be back in the office - hot desking, crammed into meeting rooms. But, yeh, I've been to the office 3 times in the last 12 months, I've done a few other visits but they haven't been for a 9am start. Certainly if I used public transport it might be concerning me a bit by now.

12 to 15 minutes on the bike depending on how a catch a level crossing.  Quite nice to get fresh air and some light exercise.  Would be even better if BMW and Audi drivers were removed from the roads.

I didn't mind the commute itself - an hour each way but I could sit and read a book, which I haven't really done at all in the last year.

What I don't want is a return to working in the office until 10pm, then getting home by 11pm when it's too late to have anything proper to eat.  I also don't want to have to wear a suit, ever again.

A few months ago I'd have said we'll never go back to working in the office five days a week, but listening to more recent discussions it feels like people are starting to swing back that way - they're so sick of lockdowns they want "normal" back, even though the last year has proved there are other ways of working (...for those of us who CAN work from home, of course).

I heard someone on the radio saying they want to see people again.  To which the reply was "yes, but I want to see my family and friends, not people at work".

I hate commuting but I think I hate working from home more so I'll be relatively happy to go back to it.

I suspect after 2 months of doing the commute again some people will be looking back fondly at the good old working from home lock down days.

Mine is approx 45 minutes on the bus into Central London. That said, I am not looking forward to being in close proximity to coughing and spluttering (which was a typical commute pre-Lockdown) and can walk it in an hour and a half. Sadly, I am lazy and like to read and daydream.

We have been told we may be able to continue a couple of days a week at home. Am quite lucky, as that's a nice mix...

We’ve pulled the plug on the lease for our office so it will continue to be up one flight of stairs and round the corner into my home office...
Don't ask me, I just play the damned thing...

A large proportion of my office worked from home some days of the week anyway. It’s the first job I’ve done where it suits working from home - just pick up a piece of work, spend a day on it, send it out, pick the next one... Not really part of a team, although the head of the group would argue against otherwise to justify their existence - it looks after itself really. When lockdown started I was coming to the end of 18 months of training new starters (quite intensive) and I was happy to come in every day so they could ask for my help. My plan was to work from home 2-3 days a week. However, the longer this goes on, the more reluctant I’m becoming to return! There was already pressure to give up your regular office desk if you were a homeworker so I suspect that’s gone now. I can see me going in one day a week at most.

I might go in for a day a week.
The 2-hour each way slog on expensive, unreliable, crowded trains ain't my thing.

Not that it effects me as I don't commute but it seems like it would be a shame if we can't take advantage of this and make a few changes that might help the environment and people's health and well being.

I'm dreading everyone else being back on the roads. Apart from four months on furlough last year I've worked through and it's actually been quite pleasant driving.

I enjoyed the summer at home, but the winter has been a slog.

I'm expecting a 3 day in, 2 day out mix, with a proviso that we attend certain meetings in person.

We own our offices, so cannot imagine that they will be left empty...

Any particular reason? I guess if you look at any group of drivers or road users you can find fault, motorcycles, hot hatches, sports cars, 4x4s and so on not just BMW or Audi drivers. I don’t particularly like cyclists on busy or fast roads riding two abreast, or using the road when there’s a cycle path parallel to the road. Controversial? Maybe, but I still give cyclists a wide berth as well as horses even though the number of times I get the universal hand signal from cyclists not obeying the Highway Code as I overtake them - obeying the Highway Code - is unreal.

In pre Covid times The trains are full when they reach my station. I’ve sometimes had to headbutt my way onto a train to make an important event on time. I’ve nearly got into fights it’s been that bad. Hate it. Inhuman. Soul destroying. And very very expensive.

I haven’t been to the office in a year.

My firm has improved its profitability in Covid. It’s also been democratising. That’s because people are wasting less time dicking about trying to get trains and can work more when it suits them.

I miss some of the socialising and fun being with colleagues. One or two days a week absolutely max in the office please.
