Awful songs that somehow made it.

But watching those Rick Beato things where he goes through the Spotify charts the current ones are painfully homogenous, like every 13 year old in the world listens to the same thing.

I've always found Rick Beato to be rather complimentary in those videos and he often highlights the little gems which we can all miss.

Freddie and the Dreamers shared charts with the Beatles after all...
We have to be so very careful, what we believe in...

I think Rick is probably more positive about them than I am. I think to a large extent it's just the nature of things that chart  - plenty of people living to a huge variety of musics in different  ways but the Spotify charts end up being a bit of a funnel out of which comes twenty songs that all sound the same.

I was going to nominate a few Chas & Dave songs in this thread but it turns out few of their songs actually "made it" so unless someone wants to start a thread "Awful songs that never graced the top 20" I'm out of luck.

It is sort of reassuring though.  I hated Chas & Dave, and even more when they were referred to as Chas 'n' Dave.  I would never buy Salt 'n' Vinegar crisps for the same reason.

Any song where most of the song is talking, like Dennis Waterman/George Cole 'What are we gonna get for 'er indoors'?'

This sang to the TOTP audience. What are they meant to do?

Got TOTP 1990 on again. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Working Man by Rita MacNeil. Reached number 11 in the U.K. To be fair a very successful country artist in Canada but awful song and who was buying it in the U.K.?

  • The Deacon Blue song where they go wooo ooo ooo
For some reason I can’t explain (and my OH finds hilarious) I can’t stand anything by a Deacon Blue. Their entire back catalogue sets my teeth on edge.
I'll get a round to buying a 'real' guitar one day.

I was watching a bit of one of those story of TOTP episodes and the problems they had getting the audience to dance to The Earth Dies Screaming by UB40. You have to wonder what the producers were thinking about sometimes.

    Indeed.

Well before The Tube, LWJH, etc.  apart from TOTP all we had was kids shows like Crackerjack where occasionally a band desperate to get noticed would turn up and have to play to an audience of schoolkids.  Even with the more "adult" orientated Tiswas you could tell that a lot of the bands hated being there.

A couple of really weird appearances spring to mind.  In their early days Dr Feelgood appeared on "The Geordie Scene" a Tyne Tees production, and when you watch it it's clear Wilko and the gang are playing to a completely different audience to the one in the studio, which seems to consist mostly of 15 year old schoolgirls.

Even stranger was the live set the Screaming Blue Messiahs did on "Number 73" - if you could find a band that were less suited to a daytime kids TV show, the Messiahs were it.

As you say, you just wonder what the producers were thinking.

I live this clip of Gary Moore on Number 73:

Presenter Neil Buchanan was the guitarist in rock band Marseille so playing a bit naive.

Surely no one can deny that Ain't No Pleasing You by Chas 'n' Dave  ;) isn't a total banger of a song.

    Laugh, love, live, learn.

    Wow.

I remember watching No. 73 but I don't remember that clip.  Gary Moore, Bob Daisley, Neil Carter and Eric Singer playing live on a kids' Saturday morning show.  So weird.

Only catching up with last week’s show. Ugly Duckling by Mike Reid, it’s the sort of porn soundtrack wah on it that makes it even odder. Tuhriffick...

    Really plumbing the depths now.

"Kinky Boots" by the "Avengers" duo of Honor Blackman and Patrick MacNee is probably the worst thing ever committed to vinyl.  For some inexplicable reason it made the top ten when reissued in 1990.  Simon Mayo was the DJ responsible for promoting it, may he rot in hell.

The only good thing about the "song" is it only lasts about a minute and a half.

That reminds me of an episode of Dinner Ladies, where someone wanted a tuna 'n' sweetcorn sandwich, but without the sweetcorn.  It was decided that, had it been tuna and sweetcorn they could leave the sweetcorn out, but as it was tuna 'n' sweetcorn, they couldn't take it out...

See I think novelty things are kinda different as everyone instinctively knows their shit. For me the stuff that's offensively bad but is held up as a work of musical genius are more offensive...you know...like Imagine.
