AC DC - Back in Black.

A majority of the lyrics seem to be about fucking something or another. Makes me sound like a prude, which I’m really not, but I find the album difficult to listen to because of it. I like the music but the lyrics are awful.
Are you not a fan of the classic 15 year old schoolboy favourite lyrics “ giving the dog a bone” and “ let me put my love into you” ? ;)

It’s nothing compared to the splendour of Spinal Tap’s “Sex Farm Womsn”.

Yeah this always tickled me  -

I think I’m missing the point too!
Though i don’t think this even has a point:

I know a girl called Elsa
    She's into Alka Seltzer
She done it with a doctor on a helicopter

Inane lyrics that a five year old would have been embarrassed to write but nonetheless made millions for them, wish i’d thought of them :D

There's sort of a tongue in cheek brilliance with those lyrics.

I'll offer a few that make me cringe

Birthday and Michelle - The Beatles. Love the hooks and the chord sequences, but honestly. They are not words that go together well

Anything by Razorlight - I actually quite liked their sound but they're lyrics were utterly atrocious. "When I go out and I come home again", "She asked me her name, I told her what it was"

Your Song by Elton John. Some utterly bizarre lyrics, he doesn't even see them through half the time to give us a clue what he's on about

Psycho by Muse. In fact a lot of Muse lyrics since their first couple of albums. I just have to ignore a lot of the vocals and the lyrics as I have grown to enjoy just the music by itself
"Your mind is just a program and I'm the virus
    I'm changing the station
    I'll improve your thresholds
I'll turn you into a super drone
And you will kill on my command
    And I won't be responsible
I'm gonna make you (three times)
    A fucking psycho
Your ass belongs to me now"
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

One of the few "lyricists" I pay attention to is Neil Fallon from Clutch.

Again, it's not exactly poetry - not in the Keats and Wordsworth sense, at least.  A lot of it reads like stream of consciousness and he certainly uses words just because they rhyme.  But the choice of words, phrases and references is just brilliant.

I don't actually mind if lyrics don't make sense. As long as they sound cool.

I remember the charlatans being asked what their lyrics meant. "eh.....stuff".

I have very little time for lyrics. If you want meaningful words go read a book. I like songs not in English, work well for me.
They are there as a vehicle for melody and expression. Any meaning is just a bonus.

Having said that particularly bad or cliched lyrics are distracting. Modern blues/ blues rock seems particularly guilty around this with songs about mojo hands and cold hearted women and dead end streets and fighting to survive.  The Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Danny Bryant school of random cliches sung over a nice riff.

Wrap all my things in aluminum. Beams of darkness streak across the sky. Pink rays from the ancient satellite. Every time I look out my window same three dogs looking back at me. Every time I open my windows cranes fly in to terrorize me. The power of the Holy Ghost. The power of the Holy Ghost.

  • The line, ‘A mole, digging in a hole’ killed Elevation by U2 for me. Sounds like the sort of dross I’d knock together.

This is Van Halen for me. Eddie was such a gifted player, one of the all time best. But I really don't like the dumb songs the band created. It's liked Eddie found his Rolf Harris, instead of his Robert Plant.

I rarely pay attention to lyrics, but I have one Nickelback album that I actually quite like (!), and there is this song that is written like they are 17 years old or something. I just hear it and think act your age you old men.

Sorry, don't know song name ...

One thing that particularly annoys me is when a writer messes about with tenses and sentence structure in a really unnatural way just to get a rhyme.  It's just such a lazy man's cop-out.  There are many example of this, but the one that always gets me is Up the Junction by Squeeze:

We spent our time just kissing
    The Railway Arms we're missing
But love had got us hooked up
And all our time it took up

It just sounds clunky and doesn't scan at all.  And this is from a band often lauded for their lyrics...

Some of the gear, some idea

Thin Lizzy - Romeo and the Lonely Girl.

"Oh poor Romeo, sitting all on his own-e-o"

The man was feted for being a poet. I hate the line a little more each time I hear it.

My favourite terrible lyric is from "When It Comes" by Incubus:

    When it comes
    It comes unannounced
And it feels like a matador is taunting me
    With his reddest red cloth

Oh yeah, I know how that feels Brandon.

    and I am the bull

....yeah, I er... I got that.

    Metallica - Whiplash:

Bang your head against the stage
    Like you never did before
Make it ring, make it bleed
    Make it really sore

I mean, I love Metallica, but really?
