Heard a lot about them but never tried them. If I were to get 1 record which would it be?

The most recent "Fortitude" is very cool.

They are very heavy drop C type stuff so not sure if that's your jam.

Protest the Hero are worth a go if you want stupid levels of technicality but still somewhat musical. Volition is my favourite album of theirs, I'm not really into the most recent one.

Kansas.  But you're probably not looking to go backwards in time.

I was a massive fan of DT, my fave band for a decade back in the day. I lost interest after Octavarium.
A similar band that I liked at the time were Symphony X, worth checking out if you haven't heard them.

Good shout. Symphony X too (above).

    I also really like...

Nightingale (Dan Swano) - album called Retribution is my favourite. Less tech than DT but really good.
Empyrios - Glorious Sickness/Zion. Guitarist is Simone Mularoni. Very heavy, love them.
DGM - Tragic Separation/Momentum (again, Simone Mularoni - he's an excellent player). Melodic/prog/shred, great stuff.

Bound to be more, I'll have to trawl my CDs/iTunes!!

Oh yeah - Hibria. Brazilian metal band. Moving Ground and X are particularly good. Loads of different stuff in there, but very very technical and melodic, absolutely love them and they should be a lot bigger! You'll like them!

I saw Opeth supporting Dream Theater they're worth a listen.
Kamelot are next on my list to check out.
If you haven't listened to Mars Volta, then do!

    I nearly suggested Mars Volta

Deloused in the Comatorium is one of my all time favourites.

Quite crazy noisy compared to dream theatre though.

Yeah I rather like Kamelot. Cool singer. My fave album is called the Black halo. They are different to Dream Theater though, less intense soloing.

Yep - don't buy them if you want to relax your brain!

Sure - in the general area of interesting bands who do real textures, with some metal stuff and can be tuneful too.
