I'm not a big Rush fan but I like Spirit and it might win an award for the wordiest set of lyrics. I would have liked a cover version by Freddie Parrot Face Davies singing one likes to believe in the freedom of music but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity and a raincoat to wear.

Yes it is in part a rewrite of Sound of Silence. Which I think probably adds to it's cleverness.

I don't really think this qualifies but hey ho:

    Ebony and ivory
    Live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard
    Oh Lord, why don't we?

The reason I don't think it qualifies is that the entire song is utterly cringeworthy, as was the video that went with it.

Love the song, but that stream of pretentious philosophy followed by "yeah !" is like fingers down a blackboard.

Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

The instrumental break in My Sharona.

with regards to Layla, I agree but it works great in Goodfellas

I reckon the lyrics are the most cringeworthy part of My Sherona.

Never gonna stop, give it up.
Such a dirty mind. Always get it up for the touch

Vegetarian and animal rights campaigner Macca apparently unaware of where ivory comes from. And using ebony doesn't have much environmental credibility either.

Elton John once said that it's dangerous to be surrounded by people who don't question you, when the persona becomes more important than the music.  I think Paul McCartney is a spectacular example. In The Beatles he always had John Lennon as a restraining force, but by the time they got to Let it Be Lennon had given up which is why he said he hated the album and the title track.

I can't believe that the composer of Eleanor Rigby and Maybe I'm Amazed could be allowed to churn out dross such as Mull of Kintyre and Silly Love Songs.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the awful 'Big boys don't cry' nonsense in 10cc's I'm Not in Love.

Oddly enough I was thinking about Dreadlock Holiday which is a song I always really liked but these days I have a bit of a double take at the lyrics. Open to interpretation maybe but not something that would get released these days perhaps.

Is it bad? All I remember is he gets mugged then shags a bird. Loved that song as a kid.
I don't know although as I typed Dreadlock Holiday into Google it tried to complete it as Dreadlock Holiday is it racist  so I don't think I'm the first person to wonder. I'm not sure anyone gets shagged.

I was walkin' down the street
    Concentratin' on truckin' right
I heard a dark voice beside of me
And I looked round in a state of fright
I saw four faces, one mad
    A brother from the gutter
They looked me up and down a bit
    And turned to each other
    I say
I don't like cricket (Oh no!)
    I love it
I don't like cricket (No no!)
    I love it
Don't you walk through my words
You got to show some respect
Don't you walk through my words
'Cause you ain't heard me out yet
Well he looked down at my silver chain
He said "I'll give you one dollar"
I said you've got to be jokin' man
It was a present from me mother
He said "I like it, I want it
I'll take it off your hands
And you'll be sorry you crossed me
You'd better understand that you're alone
    A long way from home
    And I say
I don't like reggae (No no!)
    I love it (Eh!)
    I don't like reggae (No!)
    I love it (Eh!)
    Don't you cramp me style
    Don't you queer me pitch
Don't you walk through my words
'Cause you ain't heard me out yet
I hurried back to the swimming pool
    Sinkin' pina colada
I heard a dark voice beside me say
    "Would you like something harder?"
She said, "I've got it, you want it
    My harvest is the best
And if you try it, you'll like it
And wallow in a Dreadlock Holiday"
    And I say
    Don't like Jamaica (Oh no!)
    I love her (Eh!)
    Don't like Jamaica (Oh no!)
    I love her (Oh yeah!)
Don't you walk through her words
You got to show some respect
Don't you walk through her words

I did as well. I don't know how reliable lyrics copied off a random site on the internet are. I remember looking up the lyrics to Nite Klub by The Specials once and someone had the line 'beer tastes just like piss' as 'beer tastes just like peas.'

Ladies and gentleman of the jury, I'd like to submit Mr David Coverdale's version of ZZ Top's Tush.

I believe that guitarist Adrian Vandenberg had to receive intensive medical treatment shortly after this tour: he was dieing of shame.

He had Mark King and Adrian Belew in the line-up, FFS!

I always thought the lyrics in up the junction were “we had to sell the telly ,we even sold the fire, for little kicks inside her”

a very sad song and a stark warning not to knock up some bird

Wasn't Dreadlock Holiday about an actual mugging incident he had? Bit unfair to be labeled a racist because he wrote a song about it.

Just so. I remember hearing them describe a very nasty, scary incident during a radio interview while they were touring here. The song is mild compared to the actual treatment they got, and they had every right to write it.

The song itself was a dirge, but every time Duran Duran's "Please Please Tell Me Now" came on the radio, I'd curl up into a ball at the line "Don't say you're easy on me/You're about as easy as a nuclear war".  Excruciating.
