This is the 71st solo of the Month (SotM) Challenge.

The challenge is now open and ends at midnight 23rd June 2021.

Discussion:
This backing track was kindly provided by @poopot;
You can download backing track from Soundcloud below:

https://soundcloud.com/thefretboard/sotm71-2021-06-poopot-grungy-funk

Record your solo over the top of it and then submit it (ideally in mp3 format) to solos@theFB.co.uk
Also, feel free to comment on how you approached the solo, which will add a bit more interest and maybe we can learn something from each other.

Title: Grungy Funk

Tempo: 96 bpm

Chords are:

C7(#9) - [Db(#9)] repeat x 4
Db(#9)
C7(#9) - [Db(#9)] repeat x 2
F7 - Eb9 - D9 - Db9 - F7 - Eb9 - D9 - G9 - C9

There should be headroom to record your solo. Try to set a level without excessive master limiting, because we want to avoid loudness wars.

Voting will start soon after the submission deadline, with each voter selecting their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.
First choice gets 5 points - Second choice gets 3 points - Third choice gets 1 point
The order and scores of the top three entries will be announced soon after the voting ends.

No prizes. It's just for fun.

As people submit their entries, I'll post them below to hopefully promote some discussion on approaches used for the solo:

    Sent a quick one in.

I really didn't like this track initially (soz PooPot!), i kept looping it and couldn't find a tone or a scale to fit and it really frustrated me that I couldn't grasp the scale mode.

But then, with a flash in the sky, my mind, and fingers, wondered on to a little middle section of Burning Rain by Mr Vai and that was the scale  Yes, I'd cracked the code on this little beasty of a backing track and finally I could set about playing something.

If in doubt, ask Mr Vai.  That's my motto now.

    Gibson SG Standard
    Bias FX2 custom patch
    Reaper
    Single take

    Don’t be sorry… I can’t stand it and I wrote it

    if we’re sharing… my experimental bit…

I recorded the solo on one track… then I enabled “flex pitch” on that track…

flex pitch is like logics version of auto tune I guess. You can fine tune each note etc etc… but… that’s not what I used it for

With flex pitch you can export the “flex data” as midi notes

I did that and low and behold ended up with a midi track of my guitar!!!! Duplicated the midi onto three separate tracks and assigned a different synth patch to each one…

so now have guitar and 3 synths following note for note.

Then i duplicated the original track and added a pitch shifter one octave down to it…

so now we have guitar, guitar octave down and three synths…

finally stuck a wah on the original track and roberts your mother’s brother!!!

the flex pitch to midi will be very useful for horn parts in the future I think…

Edit, playing like that is so far out of my comfort zone… always in awe of you guys with these solo challenges!.

@poopot wow that is quite complex but also quiet neat.  Much more adventurous than my dabbling.
