One amp to rule them all - for blues / rock home use and jamming only

I am looking for one amp for the above. I won’t be playing gigs, just me at home or with a mate. Mostly in the house but he has a large barn we can use.

I am not a swapper of gear so this is a long term investment.

It needs to be reliable and easy to fix. I also like simple, I don’t need it to replicate every sound ever made. Just be great at what it does.

I have something in mind but would like to see what what others think before I disclose what it is.

I like value for money, which does not mean it has to be cheap.

I will be using a Gibson LP.

Thanks in advance.

Lots to go at but.... if you like simple then a Lazy J10 or J20 would be a great investment. There is a great YouTube video of a Gibson LP gold top into a Lazy J10. No effects just guitar and amp.

What you mean is you weren’t a swapper of gear before you joined…. : )

    A JTM45 with a 2x12 cab and a couple of pedals.

It will cover any style the way a master volume amp won't, and will outlive you.

  • Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb. Built in attenuator (basically master volume simulator) so you can have it quiet at home if needed but keep majority of your sound. Gets plenty loud enough to gig if needed so barn wise should play nice. Lightweight so easy to transport.

Shameless plug, but it would fit your needs very nicely:

Laneys are always worth a look. The Cubs and Supercubs sound great.

Stock answer from me these days - Roland Blues Cube Hot. Perfect for home and can get as loud as you need for jams. It’s a Tweed style so perfect for your needs

  • The amp I am thinking of is the Lazy J10 or J20.

I was considering a Marshall sv20h with 212 cab but think the Lazy J would be better.

    Thanks for the input.

One considerable bonus of a Jazy Lay is that if you buy used they hold their price as well anything on the market. There are so many amps based on or around the Tweed Deluxe, that it might be worth at least a quick trip down the rabbit hole before making a final decision.

They sound glorious and hold their value. You can just plug in without pedals and lose hours.
They also take pedals well and the onboard VAC is great for home playing.
it’s a class amp without doubt and may save you from chopping and changing. If you are in the North West you are welcome to come and try mine.

    Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb.

Save squillions over any valve amp and it's brilliant quiet, loud and in the middle.  Oh, and you can carry it too.
Save a cow.  Eat a vegetarian.

What is your budget and what sort of sounds do you like?

There is no point in suggesting an ac15 if you want a jcm800 sound.

I would suggest the suggestions of katana, or tonemaster don't fit the bill of simple and easy to fix.

If you want Marshall the DSLs are superb and great value. If that's too complex the mini Plexi and JCM 800s are both meant to be awesome.

If you want more of a fender clean then you can't go wrong with an HRD.

If you want to get more spendy then get Rift to make you something. You could buy that in whatever flavour, know you had the best and it would outlive you.

Romany will hold its own against any amp in the category of small, home use amps. Having said that, the one I had (early Romany with plexi panel, only two power modes, P10R) was capable of keeping up at a gig as well as sounding good at home. It's not a big, boomy headroom-y clean, of course. In fact, with the P10R it's all a bit ragged turned up. But gloriously ragged...
