What kit do I need for sanding the neck on my guitar?

What's Hot
A long time ago I sanded the neck of an 84 strat and used Tung Oil to smooth it out.

A lot of the vids I see these days say Tru-Oil is better and a wax coat on top, what's the word on the forum?

What grade of sand-paper to use and any hints tips or links to tutorials?

  • I assume you're asking about the back of the neck as opposed to the fretboard.. I used a kitchen scouring pad to remove some finish from an overly glossy neck on an el-cheapo tele and it seemed to improve the feel of it without completely killing the finish.
    This one goes to eleven

  • Tru oil and wax has a nice slight darkening effect and dries to a smooth finish  its standard on musicman guitars.
You can use 400 to get the old oil off the surface then 600 for a smooth finish. Try and get paper that is not black or grey as it will sit a little bit in the pores or just give a proper wipe with lighter fluid before the oil.

my method is a bit messier, but gives very smooth results

whatever you do, lots of rubbing and buffing is key

but for a lacuqered neck, there is no point adding oil.

You can rub down with 0000 wire wool and wax (with pickups masked).  this gives a smooth satiny finish

Or you can totally rebuff with micromesh.   This still looks gloss if taken to 12000g, but the lack of buffing compound used makes it feel less squeaky

  • So don't totally remove the lacquer and tru-oil?

I wouldn't just to cure a sqeaky neck, devalues it too much and there are solutions that will work without doing that.

You just need to degloss it really
