NSD: Deepmind 6

What's Hot
Sold a guitar during the week (I spend too much time on here to actually play :) ), and had a few quid burning a hole.

I narrowly avoided my annual strat purchase -love them, but it always ends the same way with me realising they are not telecasters!

Having spent the last 10 months enjoying the ethereal sounds of the Waldorf Streichfett, which is the most easy to use, enjoyable bit of kit, I thought I’d take it to the next level.

Quick shop around and I soon found I had gone from a korg monologue to the far more complex Behringer Deepmind 6. It arrived yesterday and my little mind is utterly blown. The sounds are incredible and it is easy enough to make a good sound (or equally to make a good sound crap), and will by the looks of things take a PHD in physics to fully understand. Fun times ahead. Any easy (idiot friendly) tips from fellow users for a total newbie?

As always, can’t embed pics on iPhone but here’s a chaotic shot (if anyone needs a multi guitar stand, minus a Dali poster, give me a shout):

They punch above their weight (cost), for sure. I bought another tFBer's DM6 a couple of years ago, and spent some time recreating Juno 6/60/106 patches (settings pages from the manual found on the web). That's the simple part of the interface, quick and easy to get to grips with.

The clever (more versatile) stuff comes from exploiting the mod matrix and extra envelopes (etc), plus some of the more unusual digiFX that Behringer shoehorned in from the X-Air mixers.

    Have fun. :)

I’m just at the earliest stage of editing existing presets, looking forward to really digging into creating something of my own. The mod matrix stuff seems a whole other level that I’ll have to get my head round. Definitely an amazing bit of kit considering it is from the lower end of the synth market.

It's 100 percent on my to get list, I have heard some demos and they sound awesome. It's a toss up between the deepmind and a bass station 2...

  • If you think a deep mind is, error, deep.... dont get a virus, or even a peak.  I have both as well as a dm12...and the 12cis the easiest to work with actually.

Only the fx side take much work really.

My main tip... use the envelop shaping options.   Can make a big difference.

That shouldn't be hard really.  The dm is a way beyond the bs, though it is a decent unit.

Would it take a MIDI input from an 88-key board of choice?

Take some time to get to know the control sequencer....  While its nominally a step sequencer its not tied to notes.  It can be used in that traditional way BUT its a source for the matrix., so you can do custom steps for say resonance, and/or filter position.  Its incredible for rhythmic stuff.

Sounds good, will have to experiment with this. Cheers.

well... Its here and lovely.   Im already playing mind tetrus on how to ADD an OB6 or P6...   I could add either the keyboard versions (put the Pro 3 on a shelf above where it is now - have brackets, then pull the keyboard OB6/P6 when I want to use that - OR i could move my TR8s and Squarp pyramid onto the shelf, and get a desktop version next to my Deep Mind...

The fist has the keyboard of course, the second is easier to take live (as I just mix and match 2 or 3 modules above the fantom and RD).   Of course I could ditch the RD and take fantom and OB/P keyboard in place of it IF the project was more synth based....  Some thinking to do.

Shelf bracket would be a little higher (so I can mount it) and I can drop the table stand down an inch as well - so it would work in that regard.

i can never remember how to get pics to auto display......

I need to show my wife that synth station, might stop her asking if I really needed ‘another keyboard’.

  • Does indeed!

I only have two keyboards and my wife thinks that's one too many!

She always fails to mention her piano downstairs which takes up the space of a blimmin' sideboard... And it doesn't do MIDI
