Time for round #34 of the Fretboard Composition Challenge.

Every few months there'll be a composition challenge. It revolves around individuals or groups of forum members composing and recording music.

No prizes for this challenge. It's just for fun, a spur to creating, sharing, discussing music/recording and learning. Plus a way of testing the water with your creations and getting some feedback.

GUIDELINES -THEME
The theme for this one is: A horror track.
Thanks to @Springywheel for suggesting the idea.

To encourage entries the theme isn't mandatory, but you might get more votes if you do something that's in some way linked to the theme. That depends on how individuals choose to vote.

Compose a tune, or recycle something you've composed previously.

Picture: In addition to the music, try to create your own picture that relates to your selected theme/title. This isn't mandatory.

DATES AND VOTING
The submission deadline is extended midnight to 16th February 2022 (from the previous one of 16th January).

  • I've spend a good few hours working out how make spooky noises. Lots of fun, but I need to knuckle down and create some actual music.

    It's not a competition.

I finally had an idea, and have written the song. Hopefully I can get most of it recorded over the Christmas/New Year break.

  • I'm struggling to pin down what a horror track may sound like, is it cheating to try to ask for help with inspiration for what kind of thing to consider doing?

You could do a search for 'horror music' on Youtube. For example, check out Rick Beato's "What Makes Music Creepy? | Inside the Science of Horror Music"

Some things things that sound spooky to me are:
    • Dissonance such as semitone and/or flat 5 intervals. Especially if allowed to ring together or included in ostinato type patterns
    • Screechy noises such a plectrum scrapes
    • Low pulsating noises (such as a heart beat type sound)
    • Vocal sounds played backwards (with echo or reverb)

And now I've given away all my ideas

    It's not a competition.

Maybe try listening to soundtracks on YT to see if they give you any inspiration? I guess if you wanted to break them down you'd say they're atonal, make use of minor keys, diminished fifths (the 'devil's interval'!), the phrygian mode etc. They also make use of silence and sudden impacts- usually high in pitch. there are no rules really, just make it sound unsettling. edit: ok stratman beat me to it.

My first idea was to repeat the film based tribute angle, and nearly resulted in “Psycho”. Instead I’ve gone with a horrific story.

  • Cheers chaps that's helpful, I hadn't thought of ghosts and stuff like that, I have not watched horror movies since I was about 12 or 13 so I'd forgotten they were not just about serial killers and blood baths. Thanks for the tips

    Mine's in the playlist.

I'll add a picture later, but I wanted to set the ball rolling with the music first.

    It's not a competition.

Haven't done a thing on this, but I am going to try and get one done. It will be a bit rushed, but I'll give it a go.

I'll extend the deadline for another month to hopefully avoid rushing and to give more time for other entries.

  • I have an idea but struggling to get the space to record it, let alone work out how to make the spooky background noises. I'm hoping to put something in though, fingers crossed

    Well that's certainly different

I'll add it as a video entry when I start the voting thread.
