I’ve heard of and listened to Wolf Alice. None of the others ring a bell. I’ll give them a Spotify tomorrow.

    I feel old

Wot, no Black Keys?  Delta Kream is just an incredible album.
Glad to see Laura Mvula and Sam Fender in there though.
Self-Esteem at the top though(?).  Just a second rate Christine And The Queens IMHO.
    Dives for cover..

The Grauniad's music choice has always revolved around the worthiness of the artist as much as the music they produce.

If you've not listened to Afrique Victime, you really should spend a hour tomorrow getting hold of it and enjoy it.

Self Esteem – Prioritise Pleasure Is indeed a superb album, as is New Long Leg, Dry Cleaning

embodies the platonic ideal of pop disco

teenage years – of church and bible camp, of budding queer desire amid a culture of shame and damnation

haughty, easily hurt, lustful, clumsy and incurably romantic

the kind of thing a post-apocalyptic band of survivors would sing while rowing across a flooded city

the climate crisis, capitalism and the struggle to be allowed one’s truth and identity are among the topics broached

mulches various bits of club culture in to a fetid, sweating mass

reinvigorated the cliche by toying deliciously with concealment and exposure

where sex isn’t veiled in metaphor but detailed right down to where the ejaculate lands.

unrequited desire, sexuality, poor body image, prejudice, betrayal and depression

written as California burned during the most destructive wildfire season in history

I gave Self Esteem a go but it just sounds like High School Musical with swearing.

Edit: plenty of people like High School Musical and swearing so I can see there’s an appeal, just not to me.

Agree with Wolf Alice, exceptional album. I’ve really tried to open my mind to some of the other stuff that isn’t usually my thing. Can’t get on board with Self Esteem at all, not sure why. But Little Sims surprised me, this is epic….

  • I love the Wolf Alice album. It's great old school pop music with lovely guitar sounds and some sly, clever lyrics.

Really wanted to like the Arlo Parks album because her public persona is very likeable. Unfortunately, it's a bit one-paced for me and not an interesting listen as an album.

I have to give them a bit of credit for not going for obvious choices, but that is one heck of an obscure list!

Anyway, I cast it aside as it doesn't include my album of the year, which is in my top 10 albums ever: Lifesigns - Altitiude

Not liking that personally. I'm not a fan of Rap and I DETEST the way that rappers use their hands. Having said that, the video is quite some production. I honestly thought that quality music videos would go down the drain in this new world of people not buying music, but that doesn't seem to have been the case.

Oh, and I'm not saying I thought the song was bad, I actually think it is good but it's just not the sort of thing I want to listen to.

  • The Little Simz album is sublime.
Dry Cleaning also, great playing by the guitar/bass/drum trio, vocals an aquired taste but I like em.

Japanese breakfast and Deafhevan also excellent albums. It’s been a good year for the album imho
