So the kit is here and I’ve unboxed it.

Very quick once over is quite encouraging.

    Body with a nice flame/quilt maple veneer…

The neck looks pretty straight, fretting is ok, headstock ready to be shaped but not enormous…

Very quick fit - neck is nice and tight…

It even comes with a nice little bit of veneer to try out stains on…

And of course a big bag of not much of this will get used…

Now some thinking to be done. I have some Crimson Stunning Stains coming from the new pastel range - sea foam green and sky blue - these are intended for the top, but experimentation will precede commitment. I really like this effect…

So sides and back may get a walnut stain.

I need to do some serious pickup thinking too.

I’ll take a closer look tomorrow but all appears promising.

That's excellent. a neck which fits the body, and a spare piece of veneer. Who is the kit from?
Tree recycler, and guitarist with  https://www.undercoversband.com/.

That certainly looks to be a very good place to start.

  • Looks nice! How's the neck angle? I'm looking at this now...

A cursory examination suggests it is looking good - I will make a more considered judgement tomorrow.

My 1st kit was from Coban. I definitely recommend them, Mark was a pleasure to deal with, exchanging my cream colour parts for black when I changed my mind a few weeks down the line on my colour scheme.

Neck fit on mine was perfect too, Solderless electrics not so great as the plugs were falling apart by the time I came to fitting so I went with an Epiphone loom and pickup set in the end, just dropped right in.

    More ordering done…

    TonePros bridge and stop tail

    Schaller Da Vinci tuners

    thinking being done…

SD Seth Lover pickups? Any strong alternatives?

Pickup Rings? Could probably use what came with the kit but I’ve always quite liked chrome ones…

Headstock shape? Not sure, but not Gibson or Epi…

    wiring loom…?

Strong recommend for lollar imperial pups , i know there expensive but they really are good , ive got throbaks on my collings and i prefer the lollars , its a shame as i have some spare locking rotomatic machine heads with ebony buttons that came off my 335 but ....

Fletcher or Alegree pickups are worth a look for sensibly priced good quality pickups.

    Rats! How much?

The Lollars are definitely on my radar but I think it depends how the build goes before I commit to that sort of spendy.

I’ll take a look - same proviso as above.

Meanwhile I’ve been out in the shed… very light sanding to the sides of the neck heel and another tight dry fit. I’ve laid a few parts in place and the neck angle looks perfect! That scratchplate won’t do though! Something else to think about.

Brought all the wood inside the house - it’s a bit damp out there at the moment

  • Very impressive kit indeed! I'm going to see what GSPBASSES has available but if nothing tickles my pickle, I will likely grab one of their jazz models. Looks nice!

I've got an AllParts 335 guard going spare if that's any use? IMO you should make a bound torty guard which will set off your fancy top.

Re the scratchplate - go naked?

That's a lovely bit of quilted maple veneer, it'd be a real shame to cover any of it up with some horrible cheap plastic.

    [edit]
I'd also be looking at some chrome pickup rings.

  • One thing I haven’t mentioned is that, disappointingly, there is no large access from the pickup routs - the electrics will have to go through the f-hole - I need to experiment with that to see what kind of loom will fit.
