Genuinely not sarcasm!

They're by far the best Gibson for chimy melodic stuff. Far less of a sledgehammer than a Les Paul, but still happy to get some heavy stuff going when appropriate.

I've always been wary of the Maestro (and indeed the Sideways Vibrola) because many reviews say they mess up the tuning, kill sustain and make the guitar sound plinky (which others may define as chimey!). I've only tried one very briefly and didn't like the feel. But they look cool.

But at least if you're going for the '61 spec there should be loads of examples to try before buying.

Having had both Les Paul and '61 reissue Maestro equipped SG's, I can definitely say that the correct 18 degree Les Paul/Custom Shop versions, apart from being better guitars, definitely had better, more useable arms .... Gib USA use the 10 degree and used to be dreadful to set-up properly. Forget the sideways vibrola ....

UPDATE:

1. Bought it.

2. Liked it.

3. Didn’t love it.

4. Sending it back.

Longer version: neck was much nicer than expected. Board was laughably dry. Like, bone. Nut is awful - would need sorting to be playable. Tonally it was nice… but that’s it. I think I’m just fundamentally not into humbuckers. Neck dive / balance of the guitar was LOLZ. In terms of gibsons fabled QC… there was one tooling mark on the board, otherwise flawless as far as I could tell, nut aside. Frets are good. Paint is good. A shame, but in some ways good - I’ve scratched the itch and can move on, all for the price of a £15 return fee.

I have a 2021 Maestro model in Bristol. Its a beauty but I'm feeling the same about the humbuckers (I normally play a Jazzmaster), just a little too beefy. So I'm trying to decide wether to go for a set of Low Wind PAFs (OX4 maybe) or move it along and get a Jaguar (hehe).

If you are local you are welcome to come try it.
