Northwest Guitars Nitrocellulose... (advice please)

What's Hot
... just looking for nitrocellulose for a Shell Pink (probably) tele project. Does anyone have any thoughts on the Northwest Guitars nitrocellulose? Do their colours look right? Does the paint spray/flow evenly?

Manchester Guitar Tech’s spraycans are highly regarded around here, and the owner is on here to offer advice.

I've used northwest's black and white blonde nitro, dartfords olive green nitro and many colours from Manchester Guitar Tech.

I found the northwest nitro to be a little thicker than MGT, and it is quite susceptible to bloom. The nozzle becomes spitty easily so a clean every so often with thinners is helpful. Dartfords had a lot of solid, too much for my liking and coats went on too thick. MGT use anti-bloom solvent and I've always had great results with it having used it on about 6 guitars now.

And MGT's @SteveRobinson is a top chap and forum member too!

Thanks for the advice guys. @davros you've given some great pointers there. I have used Steve's in the past and had great results, I shall use his paints again:-)

I only use tinned paint so have no experience of aerosols really. I’d always give Manchester Guitar Tech (Steve) my business if I was ever in need of any though, he’s a credit to this site.

Having said that, I’ve used Northwest tinned paint and lacquer quite extensively over the years (only because Steve doesn’t stock it) and always found it to be top notch fwiw.

    Thanks everyone.

If I didn't think my lacquer was the best available I would not sell it. I use it every week myself for repairs, as do many other repairers. It's also used by a number of professional UK builders whose names you'll know.

to @Deadman's point above, do you sell your lacquer in tin's for those with spray guns?

I don't sorry @WezV. I don't have room to stock it and transportation is an issue, DPD will tolerate aerosols but not liquid in tins.

I don't know how others such as Kevin at NWG manage to get around courier restrictions on paint.

When I worked in a yacht chandlery we sent paint by UPS. Lid of can seriously taped down then sealed in a polythene bag and bubble wrapped. I get Hammerite from Amazon packed similarly.

I use nitro from both companies and see no difference between them. The surf green I used from Northwest for my latest body was spot on colour-wise and sprayed clean and even

UPS offers a specialist liquids service. I used it once via a broker for a delivery to France but couldn't interest UPS in giving me an account, maybe my volumes weren't high enough.

We've used MGT stuff with good results .
I just got obsessive about shaking cans properly to get the mix right

Idea adapted from something we saw on Adam Savage's page

Many guitars have a re-sale value. Some you'll never want to sell.
