Anti static matting

Dear All,
I'm expecting a couple of basic pedal kits by way of an introduction into get:ting into making some of my own electronics for guitar. How important is it to guard against static electricity damage to components? Essentially I'm trying to get a feel for how robust pedal components are and whether I need to invest in anti-static matting etc. There's no mention of this in the instructions in terms of tools required but I thought it might be worth considering.
