Iceland - the country

What's Hot
My wife and I just got back from a 4 night trip to Iceland. We arrived there on Thursday morning and picked up an old banger of a hire car to take us to all the cool sights.

[I'm blocked from Photobucket at work, but you'll find pictures if you scour through my Photobucket page here: http://s376.photobucket.com/user/RodriguezFamilyUK/library]

The place is incredible. The scenery changes so dramatically and is like something from a futuristic, post-apocalyptic computer game. Or, at times, like you're the first civilians to arrive on Mars.

Was it expensive? Not really. Beer is about £5 per pint, which is a lot but we didn't have much time for drinking. We had a few gin cocktails one evening, but that was at an event in a record store and the drinks were included in the entry price! So £10 to watch some amazing musicians perform, and free cocktails all night. Not bad!
Food seems a bit more expensive, but then the portions were very generous. We paid £20 for two big burgers with fries and a couple of hot drinks. And main courses in restaurants were usually £15 - £30. But for £26 I had a stunning fillet steak, and for £19 a beautiful plate of pasta with langoustines.
Something to keep in mind is that everywhere you go gives you free spring water, and as much as you like. You don't even have to ask, it's something they're very proud of so you get a glass within moments of sitting down and they top it up regularly.
And something else to take into account is that parking at attractions is free, and the city is so small that you can walk everywhere anyway. And there's rarely a charge to see the attractions. The only thing we paid to enter was the church tower (£3.50 each) and the Blue Lagoon (£28 each) but those are both understandable.

The people are really friendly and helpful and speak great English. It's a safe feeling place and they enjoy socialising. The record store gig came about because we asked where to go and see some local bands, and ended up chatting with the store owner and others in the audience. We'd not normally do that in the UK.

Did it smell of egg? In places, but you get used to it quickly and it's usually only where the volcanic activity is occurring so your mind is too busy looking at cool stuff to care.

Was the Blue Lagoon worth the high entry price? Yes. I'd fly back for a day just to go again. And it was windy and overcast when we went, so it could only be better in warmer weather or with snow surrounding it. In places the water was extremely hot to the point where I had to turn back instead of walking through it. It's just so tranquil that you can while away several hours in there and never feel rushed or annoyed by the masses of people - it's big enough to cope with large numbers and we were wise enough to visit later in the afternoon when the peak time had passed.

Seriously, it is a stunning place that I would recommend to anyone. A great way for my wife and I to enjoy our 15th anniversary.

Awesome country. Almost 11 years since I was there (our Honeymoon) and I'd so love to go back. Glad you have a great trip, it really is out of this world.

It is a great country .. a friend of mine is a pro-photographer [he wins awards] and visits regularly. He stayed at a hotel with a few rooms and no staff. The key is left in the door and you cook your own food and help yourself to drinks. His landscape pictures are stunning .. they look like an alien planet.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

When we checked in at Hotel Geysir the really friendly lady said "You can have a room in the hotel wing, or you can have a log cabin. If I was you, and wanted some privacy, I'd have the log cabin".

    We had the log cabin.

My wifes cousin lives there, he loves it. He went there because he couldn't stand his dads attitude to him being gay, no such trouble over there. It looks amazing, I've never been but my wife has.

  • Great place. I was very fortunate to go wit somone who knew it extremely well. Reyjavik is a good place, Blue Lagoon worth it too.

The real highlight for me though was the focus of the trip, which was going into the interior and doing a full on 4 day hike, Lanmanalaugar to Thorsmork.

I have to repeat that one day.
