Scratchplate/pickguard cutting: tips anyone?

What's Hot
I’m about to cut out a Strat scratchplate to take a humbucker.  The last time I did this I was about 15 and must have used hand tools.

This time I’m thinking of using a router.  The smallest bit I have is 6mm diameter, so I guess I’ll have to do the corners by hand.  Never used the router on plastic before, so it’s a little leap into the unknown.

Anyone got any tips?  Anyone think they know the best way of doing this job?

Thanks

6mm diameter should be fine I think. It might be best though to do most of the work using a bigger bit then just using the 6mm one to get into the corners.

Do you have a template? Or a router table?

You should remove as much material as you can first either with a drill or saw.

Go slowly, don't try to remove too much plastic too quickly or or can grab and you'll get tear-out.

I made this one the other day from a no-hole pickguard.

    Thanks @SteveRobinson , that’s really helpful.

I had a homemade router table but it’s quite old and has warped, so, um, no.  I was thinking of spending quite a bit of time on making a template or being careful with fences - my router experience tells me it’s all in the prep!

I take your point about removing the bulk by some other means and then cleaning up the edges with the router.  Smashing.  Thanks again.

    Nice job BTW.

    peperami to mint
I am not keen on the pale green mint but anything is better than those three-ply torty 'guards that omit the lower white layer.
You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.
