Bridges for a 7-string...

What's Hot
So my friend is building me this:

And he's got a hard-tail 7-string bridge of some description, which looks a bit basic to me but functional. I had mentioned I would prefer a tune-o-matic style bridge, but he says it would need to be counter sunk to accommodate the angle of the neck. I don't know either way really.

In short: anyone know where I might be able to buy a nice fixed tail non tune-o-matic bridge in the EU? Something Hipshotty perhaps??

I'd go for a recessed TOM, but the Hip shot 7er is nice. I've bought Hip shot bits from Simnet before: http://www.simnettguitars.com/home/toolstore#!/~/product/category=3642197&id=15529569

Yeah he doesn't really want to do a recessed TOM, which is part of the problem.

They're probably a bit trickier to do by 'hand'. If he's not keen I'd be inclined to go Hipshot. Especially on something vaguely Fendery.

I've sent him the hipshot link, thx for that Spork.

With the TOM, I don't entirely understand the reluctance. Isn't it just a case of drilling the right sized holes to the depth of the TOM pegs? Or am I massively oversimplifying it?

Nah - the entire bridge will need to be recessed, so you need to rout out a pocket pretty precisely. This is how I did it - easy with CNC. http://monkeyfx.co.uk/pictures/builds/sp5/finished_front_detail_sm.jpg

Ohhhhhhhh... yeah okay, I see. But it's a bit strange, because I've seen plenty of 7-strings that didn't have that. Like these for instance:

Not doubting him or you, just confused!

thats it.   no doubt if you had told him you wanted a TOM at the start of the build he could have angled the neck back, but its a bit late now so the recess is the only option... if you want the TOM

always best to decide on the key components before you start cutting wood and certainly before setting neck angle

you can get a hipshot hardtail here, although they will need to be ordered in - note the difference in baseplate thickness

Indeed, but he'd already started it before I even really considered what I wanted - started out as a drunken conversation in the pub! :D

Ahv- sorry, I just saw the neck and realised what the implications were.

I've got the tremolo version of that on my 7er and it's very nice.

  • Hi all, yes, Andy is right, the original conversation was a Lefthand Tele, through body with humbuckers. Everything else was just as Tele, so I assumed (dangerous I know) that a hard tail Hipshot style bridge would do as I would usually do a neck pitch. I am still new at this building lark so at least I know for next time to be more specific! Sorry Drew!
