Songs where the bass surprises

What's Hot
Listening to Jagged Little Pill & the bass on You Oughta Know kicks. Funky and stands out well in the mix despite it being a busy track. The whole album is worth a listen, I was surprised after not listening to it for 20 years.

Any other (commercial) songs where the bass is having a blast & you can lock onto it?

Pretty much anything Mick Karn played on, but I'll go with I Second That Emotion for the purposes of this thread.

In a classic rock blues format then Free - Mr Big - Live version even better and remember they were still kids when they wrote/recorded/played these songs

    Chic/Bernard Edwards

The Who - Can you see the real me

There of course 1000's of great tracks but those 3 will do for now

    Yes anything by Bernard Edwards.

I've been getting into bass again and learning some of his basslines, which are incredible. WTF is going on with 'Everybody Dance', he seems to have come up with a whole new way of playing the bass to do that one :), by strumming with his first finger. I'm starting to wear the skin off my first finger.

    It's not a competition.

  • Everything on Crash Test Dummies' album "God Shuffled His Feet".  Dan Roberts is extremely underrated.

Kajagoogoo - Too Shy. Nick Beggs is a fantastic musician.

  • Maybe not 'lock on' but the delayed bass (Herbie Flowers?) on Rock On by David Essex still seems surprising on a number one hit. 1973 and it prefigures dub reggae.
Klaus Voorman's faux flamenco bass on the intro to Carly Simon's You're So Vain is another surprise (not least that I didn't even realise it was bass for thirty years).
Maybe Too Shy by Kajagoogoo with Nick Beggs' funky bass.

  • Bruce Thomas on Pump It Up (Elvis Costello). Another one I've enjoyed learning recently.

Your others were great shouts, too. But that Too Shy bass line is a beast!

That might explain it. Will have to see if he’s on any other tracks.

    Top suggestions so far. Thanks!

I only realised the other day that Bill was either the first or one of the first fretless bassists. So it is on tracks like I'm a King Bee from 1964. He's seen as the fuddy duddy uninteresting guy up a corner but he did some interesting things.

Most of Curve's output - really growly, often fretless.
