Free The Tone delays - explain?

Am in Japan and these seem keenly priced. I’ve always seen them on fancy boards but never tried one.

What is it they do particularly well? And what’s the difference between the Flight Time and the Future Factory?

You have to remember that the guy that owns the company thinks that the colour of the insulation on guitar cables makes a difference to the tone.

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

    @stickyfiddle ;
I've got a Flight Time, it is a great delay but it can be fiddly to program because of the lack of knobs.

Future Factory is a more flexible pedal, has some knobs, stereo output that the Flight Time lacks.
Flight Tim also doesn't respond to Midi Clock, not sure if the FF fixed this.

I find it sits very well in a mix, where other delays can get lost.
High quality but maybe a little under-featured compared with other brands.

Suggest you watch the relevant comparisons/demos on the tube. Pedal show boys seem to like them which you may or may not take as a recommendation.
Old, overweight and badly maintained. Unlike my amps which are just old and overweight.

Are they mono?  I remember them coming out, there were a couple of key features at this price point which stopped me getting one.

FT- nearest thing you'll find to a 2290 in terms of sound. Mono only, V2 miles best.

FF - very complex, stereo, has mods and more filtering.

    Cheers all.

FT is def mono, FF is stereo and a bit mental. To be fair I haven’t seen either irl yet but a fair few other FTT pedals in a couple of shops so will keep my eyes open in Tokyo

There’s also the Cosmic Wave, which is basically the same delay engine as the FT running at 9 volts in a smaller footprint package, with a load of slightly odd filtering options and a better UI with little screen. It is pitched as a filter delay but IMO works just as well in standard delay mode.

I prefer the FT but the CW still sounds good and is cheaper, easier to tweak, easier to power and takes up less space on a board.

Yeah I flicked through that vid and the FF does sound particularly epic. I’m not sure I have the strength to learn such a “different” UI but I’m keen to try one at least

It’s also entirely possible that I’ll find a used Suhr Discovery in which case I’ll almost certainly buy one of those…

A related cousin, but simple and therefore easy to use is the Providence Chrono. Same guy was involved in both. Sounds great!

Have you considered a Boss DM-101? Extended delay time, brighter ‘Modern’ mode, 4-head multi-tap mode like a Space Echo, modulation, and programmable too.

Yeah, not a bad call given I usually forgot Boss exists.

I should probably also be clear, this is more about grabbing any bargains I see in Tokyo than necessarily deciding the all time greatest fancy delay pedal..!! :D

I've just returned a Suhr Discovery for a second time... The first one had a defective LED, the second had excessive noise. Based on that experience I thought i would cut my losses. I happen to have ordered a Future Factory before seeing this thread!

Japan is one of the most expensive places in the world though.

When I was there is was more about finding things that I could never get in the UK or US, rather than finding bargains.

That might have changed (it has been a while) of course but I don't remember seeing a single thing that was cheaper than I could get it in the US or UK, there was just a lot of stuff that was unobtainium in those places, but they were expensive.

    Singapore was much the same.
I did find some bargains there, but they were sold on the SG equivalent of Gumtree.

    ...

I'm sure I saw a TPS video where Dan found a Tokyo shop full of bargain (old) Boss pedals.

Japan isn't as expensive as people think AT THE MOMENT, due to the weak yen.

Real Estate, Properties, driving on the motorway (they are all tolls), those are expensive but everything else.....at least at the moment, it is cheap for a tourist.

It is like 190 yen to £1 at the moment.

A bowl of Ramen is like £5, I went to omekase like 15 course sushi for 9000 yen which came to like £55.  In my mind I was always budgeting 100 yen = £1 but of course things ended up much cheaper as when I went it was 150 yen to £1.

These were last April 2023.  Boss Angry Driver is 24000 yen which is £127, it is £172 in PMT.  The used Boss OD-2 is £40.  Blues Driver is £63 there.

Of course, things like guitars (or anything over £390..if you are buying nothing else) will have to take duty and tax into account.  What isn't as good value is American made stuff, but EQ stuff still works out cheaper from some quick comparison.  Japanese made stuff currently is all on sale from the weak yen.

Yeah Raymond says the Yen is epically low right now, so prices especially on used gear are really good for once!

Will se how I get on. Never mind pedals I have a cherry 335 and Pelham Firebird with my name on in Shibuya…
