Cut it right back with 800 grit. Got back to the white but gone trough slightly in a couple of spots, I THINK it's salvagable....we'll see...

So here's where we are at this morning....

    image

Not sure what the radioactive glow is all about....but hopefully it's going to be radically different and more pleasing to my eye by the end of the weekend...albeit a total deviation from the original plan....

So, as someone once said, all the best laid plans go to shit...or something like that!

Anyway, I had my heart set on a white blonde Esquire, just like a CS one I recently sold...go figure...but, this being my second time spraying White Blonde...and my second time ruining it with too much tint...I fell dispondent.

I took to google and various forums looking for inspiration and found it in a quote from A.N. Other american on a Telecaster forum..."Who wants to see another Blonde Tele anyway?".

Time being of a premium, I was off on tour in two days time, I googled local cellulose suppliers in my area and hit on a place that did as near as damn it to original Dupont Cadillac colours, the same as Fender used for their custom colours. I raced across there and scanned through the swatches, they have most of the great ones, Dakota Red, Lake Placid Blue, Sonic Blue etc, etc but this one took my eye....Shoreline Gold.

So here's where we are at this morning, quite a departure but I'm quite excited!

Cheers @DrBob! I must say it's going to be a long month waiting for this one to gas off...

I've got a great Fatboy Aged guard to go on it and it really compliments the gold.

I'm tempted to do a matching headstock too but I've already done it with a period correct decal. What are the thoughts from the floor? Too much?

    Interesting where you're taking this.
It was Hymal's GSP tele that I had to back out of making a deal due to money pressures.
I still felt guilty having pretty much agreed to a deal -  so glad @Hymnal got to sell it after all.
And I would not have been as adventurous as you're being.
A simple nut job and set up would have seen me right.
    :)

So here's were we are at the minute. I'm still intending to do a 'closet classic' job on it but I was without an Esquire and I can't be without one for too long so the nitro was dry enough to flatten and polish out and I put it back together:

I'm pretty chffed with how it's turned out!

I'm going to try and get the lacquer to craze, I've got the option of using my mum's chest freezer but I might do it the 'old fashioned way' and leave it in the car/garage overnight during winter and see what happens. I've sprayed it pretty thin so i'm hoping it'll show up some natural wear and tear before too long.

Got me hooked on Fender custom colours now....just deciding what my next one will be! :-)

  • On paper, that colour is grim.  I wouldn't want it at all.

On Tele, though, that's fricking gorgeous! Really classy looking instrument.  Don't relic it, if it's that thin itll do it all by itself and gawd I love it.

What's the colour called?  Where did you get it?

    Cheers @ThePrettyDamned!

It's official Fender name is Shoreline Gold which is a bit of a misnomer as it's more a pearlescent pewter/broze colour. I was unsure of it but I agree, I think it looks great on a Tele.

I actually got it from a local car paint specialist. They had a swatch book of cellulose colours which, amazingly, had all the old Cadillac colours in which of course Fender used on their guitars, they had all the good ones: Dakota Red, Lake Placid Blue, Sonic Blue, Seafoam Green etc, etc. I can PM you the details if you're interested?

    Cool man! Yeah, sure thing.

I don't know how I'd go about spraying though... I'd need to wait for a better time of year, and make myself a crude spraying booth.
