I think Speakers Corner was designed as a home for those boring religious debates that raged for about 30 pages back on MR...

And I think it is only visibile to people who are registered, so potential members will not be scared off by said debates.

I think of Off Topic as being like a US forum Off Topic where religion and politics are not to be discussed, so those all go into Speakers Corner on here. Based on my occasional look in there it is where the angry forum members go to vent their spleens.
I think this is a good separation. I come on here to escape the misery of my own hum drum existence not to read about others.

I still have a bad cold BTW.

Yep. I think it is a good idea. A members only section for anything potentially controversial means that anyone who doesn't want to see those kind of debates can just stay out of the section.

I was under the impression that if you're going to get philosophical, religious, or political then you should go to speakers corner. Off topic is IMO for Readers' Cats, Sporky's hat, computer stuff, and any other OT subjects.

Ayup - essentially Speakers' Corner is for the sort of stuff that results in a heated debate.

It is NOT for NSFW images.

There are still rules that apply (see The Rules) and you do all still need to be decent towards each other, but somewhat more robust posting styles are OK there.

Off Topic is for the happy-joy-joy stuff. Or minor whinging. That sort of thing.
