I just got tickets!!

September next year with Jonsi, Georg and Kjartan plus a mate on drums and full orchestra. This will be almost my last possible configuration to see them (previously seen as 4-piece, 15-ish piece including folk instruments/percussion, and more-electronic 3-piece) unless they do another tour with Amiina for an ~8 piece lineup.

Can't wait!!

(also due to a mix-up with dates & seats I have 2 spare tickets if anyone wants them for face value. I'll put up a proper thread nearer the time but if anyone wants dibs just ping me)

Think I've seen them 3 times - best was 2008 after they'd released Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (copy and pasted that). Think I sort of overplayed them back then, and next two times I saw them was in large soulless auditoriums, where the intensity was lost. Would've loved to see them in Iceland round about the time they filmed Heima, and played the shows with Amina.

When I saw them in 2013, they had strings and brass, but the acoustics were so bad, you couldn't really hear them.

Sure the show at the Albert Hall will be great though.

On a related note I absolutely loved the one with the blue cardboard cover and the one after it, ( ) I think it was called.

Haven't listened to them for so many years, will blast again tomorrow.

On an unrelated note I went to see Godspeed You! Black Emperor at the Barrowlands a couple weeks ago. You really should if you get the chance, was so intense.

Yep - I saw GYBE back in the day too at Barrowlands. And A Silver Mt Zion a couple of times - I actually preferred them - Efrim was quite funny and chatty. Very much not in Godspeed mode.

I saw Sigur Ros and Godspeed You! Black Emperor in a double bill back in 2000 in The Lemon Tree in Aberdeen. Fucking amazing night.

Saw Sigur again during the Með suð period and it was such a celebratory atmosphere, just incredible.

Albert Hall sounds like a bloody great gig

I've never seen GYBE - they're on my list but seemingly unlikely given they don't play that often and certainly don't play anywhere near me it feels unlikely!

    Our previous SR gigs were...
    - Alexandra Palace (Með suð) - great gig but terrible venue and no screens. It did get turned into the INNI film & soundtrack though, which is cool
    - Brixton Academy (Valtari/Kveikur) - this was early 2013, so they actually played a bunch off Kveikur but only 1 from Valtari. Utterly incredible. I've never heard a London venue fall as quiet as it did when they played
    Varúð
    - Reykjavik 2017 - 2 nights before NYE in the middle of their run at the opera house. 3 piece lineup, more electronic than normal and we were about 4 rows back, right in front of Orri. It's the gig that made me decide to pick up drumming, and still one of the most powerful things I've ever experienced. They also played a bunch of new (at the time) stuff from the record that never got finished (Á,
Niður, Varða, Óveður) which are all among my absolute favourites of theirs. It still hurts that we never got that album tbh...

Only seen them once, but for some reason the venue had all the heating on and so my wife passed out and I missed most of it.

  • I had no idea about this, is it sold out?

I saw them in Iceland about 7 years ago. It was one of the most staggering moments of my life.
    How very rock and roll

I have only seen them once. I have been trying to remember when it was. It was late 98 or early 99. They were supporting Gus Gus in this hanger at Reykjavik airport. I had seen Jonsi with Bee Spider and I liked them so I was expecting great things. Biggest disappointment of my life. It was like seeing someone driving a car. 1st gear then 2nd now get rid of the cello bow and let’s go and it never happened. I guess when you have preconceived ideas of what something should sound like and it doesn’t the disappointment is massive. I never gave them a chance again.

My friend was the touring drummer for Jonsi’s Go tour in 2010 so he dragged me along and it was fantastic.

I might be ready for them again now around 25+ years later. I had totally forgotten about this until I saw this thread.

If anyone is looking for another low-key Icelandic musician I highly recommend Ásgeir I saw him couple of years back and he was great.

This was last night. It was every bit as good as you’d expect.

Spoilers below as I know Froglord is going tonight

Heavily leaning on the ambient-adjacent stuff and almost none of the “big hits”.
The orchestra was perfect and the choir was perfect and the RAH organ got some serious work for the final section.
Not my favourite SR concert because I’m lucky to have seen them a bunch of times and also like them most at their heaviest & most doomy/electronic it but man it was perfect

I'd love to see them again. We went to Manchester Apollo years ago but it was sold out and they left the radiators on full blast couldn't turn them off and my wife passed out so we missed loads of it.

That would be my idea of boring pretentious hell
Give me a good Country 5 piece in a Nashville HonkyTonk any day of the week

Highly realistic unpretentious Nashville HonkyTonk of course.

Life would be far easier if we all liked the same style of music. Or even just the same band.
A guitar doesn't care how good you are, all it asks for is it's played.

I don’t think these songs would work arranged for a 5-piece country band.

Though I could see some pedal steel working on some of their material.

Anyway, if it helps, this is a couple of other extremes of their vibe. I’m guessing Dominic won’t like these either and that’s ok
