Anyone seen or read Death note (anime/manga)?

My two girls are obsessed with anime and manga stuff, it's always on in the background somewhere. I've been sat in the same room over the weekend and caught a few episodes of Death note. Wow, it's quite a fascinating piece of work. The story is very complex and multi layered. The Japanese seem to do a great job creating these things. I'm gonna have to start watching from the beginning. I couldn't imagine the western world coming up with such a superb and original story.

I watched the films, they were pants and put me off trying the animated version.

Which is a bit daft really

Nooooooo! Don't watch the live films. The anime is really captivating. It's on Netflix. Seriously good!

My 14 year old son has read the books and, I think, seen the films. He likes them.

Yeah, I was watching Attack on Titan and High School Of The Dead last night on Netflix.

Us Netflix has always had a good selection, nice to see some coming over to the UK, so I can go straight to tv without pissing about with cables.

Only watched the Deathnote films because I was given a ltd edition box set of them

he is in full on Kevin mode this weekend. Anyway, he says you really need to read the books. I've seen a few anime films but not Death Note. Interesting but they go on too long for me.

I don't want to enjoy anime because of the annoying fangirls, but I do like a bit of it. I might give this death note a go.

Yes, but I can't really talk about it. It's a pretty sensitive subject, what with all the people dying and what not, and I wouldn't want to offend anyone.

I was thinking of watching it for the notes. Is there a decent amount of shorthand? Any gratuitously narrow feint notebooks?

  • Some are good, some crap. Check out the old "full metal alchemist" series - amazing. They remade it but I've not seen the remake.
Haven't watched anything like that for ages

Yup, Death Note is very good. I have and "L" t-shirt to show off my geekdom. It's unusual in the way that most of the story is spent with the pro/antagonist exploring the logical boundaries of his "super-power".

The remake is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood which is miles better than the original anime too (and is on Netflix!)

I have the first few somewhere, keep meaning to watch it but you know, time...

Saw the trailer for Big Hero 6 and it reminds me a lot of 'Robotics; Notes' which I enjoy a lot - not sure if kids controlling brawling robots is an established genre so I'll hold off on the 'rip off' accusation for now.

    Fullmetal Alchemist is aces

FMA I wasn't quite so keen on, but I caught an episode of Sword art online the other day, and I have to say that the episode had a great plot. There were a couple of turns at the end which really lifted it in my opinion. These anime seem to often have very good writing.

    indeed.

TBH that does put me off.

The first few episodes were not to bad - mostly limited to the opening credits with the episode actually being focused on killing zombies and the occasional gratuitous panty or cleavage shot.   Then they introduce the school nurse who seems to be accompanied by a boing noise every time she moves and somehow made me think of a dead heat in a zeppelin race.

Then they get to a safe house with a bath and I may as well be spending my time watching real women in real porn.  Then you remember that 3 of the female characters are high school students, and that is not something that does it for me

Its a shame because I thought some of the Zombie action bits were really good and I don't mind a bit of, erm, fan service.  But I am not sure I will bother again for fear of "just watching it for the stories"

I did start Death Note instead last night.  the first episode is very much like the film, but it would be.  be interesting to see what they can do with it with more time to fill

I'm watching episode 1 of death note right now, seems excellent so far. A lot of people I know are big into it, so I'm more than willing to give it a shot.

I thought i'd necrobump this slightly. I've started watching a lot of anime recently. I checked out Death Note and pretty much binge watched all of it in one sitting.
I watched a few manga/anime films years ago. I've just finished watching Steins Gate, FMA and Blue Exorcist. I googled the top ten anime shows and I spent a small fortune on DVD's...including Cowboy Be Bop which I've never seen before (i know).
I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.

A lot of it is in Netflix...do a 1 month trial and just watch it all :)

The whole Ghost In The Shell series is essential viewing, real hardcore cyberpunk/tech.

Ergo Proxy is another series worth watching too.

If you like the whole human-robot concept then another show called 'Eve No Jikan' is worth checking out. It's not an action series but it does question how the future relationship between tech and humans will play out.
