OK.
These are basswood bodies with a 3mm-ish
MDF veneer, plastic wood effect pattern under a coat of lacquer. If you want to strip to bare wood, think again.
Anyway,in the name of modding I used a heat gun to remove the front lacquer/wood effect to leave the smooth mdf.
Nice.
Not the surface I was hoping to find when purchasing the guitar but never mind I'll go to plan B. Eventually.
While I was at it I quickly reshaped the headstock to a more Tele shape. As you can see it's ok but too pointy so that need modifying.
That's it for now.Hope it helps.

Pictures of the Cheesy Spanglecaster tomorrow.
Frets are levelled and polished, new bone nut and an Artec alnico pickup added for now.
Padded top with gold material + tassles.Glitter on the headstock, rough cut control plate with gold leaf.Bridge chrome sanded off with a belt sander.
Just going with the flow with this one.I hope to have some gold crochet doileys and jewellery added soon.
Originally it was to be a Liberache inspired guitar-think botox treatment, wigs, dodgy plastic surgery + plenty of faded OTT glamour.
It's going a bit faded Bollywood though...
All good fun.

The gold isn't stuck on so yes it rubs off.I'd spray mount then lacquer over it if I decide to go with the leaf-see picture.
