What is this scam?

Just had a very weird occurrence.
A woman in her 20's knocked at my door and said 'I've just bought number 10 and slept there last night but I don't have my keys to my own house as I lost them. Can someone drop some keys off to you and I will be around to pick them up at 12 oclock?'

No 10 is for sale but I know them and I know they a) hadn't exchanged yet and b) were currently in the house as I could see them in the garden.

I went and excused myself and had a word with the neighbours- they didn't know who she was (she gave me a name, probably false).

Went back to the front door and said  my neighbours didn't know her.
She then said "Ok, let me tell you the truth- I have been kicked out by my boyfriend and I need to get keys to get back into the house".

I said to her that I didn't know what scam she was pulling but clearly she was trying something on.

At that point I quickly took a snapshot of her with my iPhone and said 'now I've got your face, you might be best off now'.
She definitely DIDN'T want me taking her picture- turned very quickly (I got a good side profile).

Does anyone know what this scam is?
Is she trying to get into the house, or are they dropping *something other than keys off', or something else?

I've reported it to the Police- just wondering if this is something people have heard of.

Could just be an excuse to knock on the door and see if your house is ripe for thieving there and then.

Are they your next door neighbours?  If so, it's possible she was hoping you would say - 'oh don't worries, I've got keys you can use.'.

That sounds the most likely. I can't think of any other benefit of supposedly dropping off keys to you when you're in and then picking them up again when you're in - unless she was hoping you'd tell her when you wouldn't be in.

Definitely highly suspicious though.

Oh... and "a woman in her twenties" ??  You need to go to Specsavers mate !

and...  if she'd slept in the house she's 'just bought', she obviously has keys for it, so why couldn't this other person just pop her (old) keys through the letterbox of the new place ?

I'm intrigued...  I'd love to work out what the scam is.  Maybe the person doing the dropping off is getting scammed ?

Edit: Just re-read your original post...  She was asking for keys to the house that's up for sale ?... not her 'old' house ?

She was saying the keys to the house that she currently lived in, rather than the one she just bought, which I knew she hadn't.

I met the new owner of the house a few days ago and he had a bigger beard than this bint.

Yes, I really don't know what the scam was.

Definitely dodgy though.

The whole Croydon facelift is a dead giveaway.
