Why did I only find this out today?
The theme tune to Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy is actually an Eagles album track. It's a very evocative piece for me and I always assumed it was a BBC composition. And we had Eagles albums in the house!

Genuine surprise.

    heh, did not know that.

I found out a few month back that the theme music from Absolutely Fabulous is a track from The Band, I always thought Ade Edmundson wrote it.

Didn't know the Eagles one, Douglas Adams was a big classic rock fan though (I think he listed what he had been listening to whilst typing in each book).

I got into Peter Gabriel from reading Douglas Adams as one of his books is dedicated to them.

Douglas Adams chose it as the theme for the radio series. He wanted something that sounded sci-fi but with a 'traveller' motif. He thought the banjo did just that and picked that track. It fits perfectly for me.
The TV version was a re-recording.

Dirk Gently played a left-handed Synthaxe ..... because Douglas couldn't afford one!
