Advice for first stage OD pedal

What's Hot

Hi Guys I'm looking to add a first stage OD pedal to my board and was wanting some advice on potential pedals

I'm looking for low to med gain I did really fancy a Bondi Sick As but after contacting Bondi they don't ship to EU anymore because of ROHS regulations I'd ideally like something that doesn't colour the tone to much
Any input would be great thanks

What do you need it to do?
    Make louder?
    Add gain?
be the alternative to a gain channel on a single channel amp?

If you are still after a Bondi Sick As you could try these...

Depending on the amp you're using the gain you need might be there already and just need unleashing with something like a Suhr Koko or Dual Boost. Brilliantly useful pedals both.

I've recently got a ThorpyFX Peacekeeper and it's very good indeed.

If you want something a bit cheaper then the TC Spark is also great.

I have a MIAB, the Bogner La Grange pedal, it's switchable between low, medium and high gain and is all in all a very good pedal. The only reason I'm selling is because I've bought a Strymon Sunset which covers all my overdrive/distortion needs. Check the Bogner out on YouTube it really is good.
Tomorrow will be a good day.

Cheap and cheerful - Tubescreamer, it's a classic for a reason.

Bit more - Peacekeeper, my favourite Thorpy pedal - everything from clean boost, Tubescreamer and beyond.

Dark horse - Mojo Hand Rook, very pleased with mine

There's a Barber Gain Changer in the classifieds - fantastic choice. Does everything from clean boost through mild on the edge of break up to full on dirt with a choice of flat eq or mildly boosted mids. Great pedal.

I'd look at a Boss SD-1 as a starting point. Good all-round, easy to obtain and cheap.
Also consider the MXR range, they do some fantastic OD's.

    Where to start?
There are about a zillion OD pedals out there.
Having said that, there's clearly only one answer: Way Huge Pork Loin.

As a rule of thumb, for pushy-amp-and-with-a-bit-of-its-own-distortion pedals, you can pretty well narrow it down to two pedals and one will sound good - the boss sd1 or the mxr dist iii.

Both are cheap, which is nice, and both sound great. Once you know which of these pedals works best, you could look to "upgrade" if you really feel the need to. After a lot of distortion pedal hunting, I found myself coming back to the trusty old faves.

What sort of stuff do you like to play?
Do you use a clean or dirty sounding amp?

Not very well known in these parts but the maybe the BMF El Jefe Overdrive? also previously known as BMF Holy Balls OD. There's one in the FB classifieds for £85, I'm tempted myself, it's a bargain! It's gets a lot of great reviews on other forums I've come across. Nice YT demos of it too.

This. Or like I said before, the AC wil give you a bit more gain to play with, veeerrrry transparent. Can't go wrong with xotic.
