I think this could be a good idea if it prevents attacks, so long as it isn't a prison environment and people are vetted and deradicalised .. controversial though.

Tarique Ghaffur, an Assistant Commissioner at Scotland Yard at the the 7/7 bombings, has called for the internment of radical extremists.

Mr Ghaffur, an Asian Mancunian who was the security coordinator for  the 2012 Olympics, said Britain is facing an unprecedented threat.

“About 3,000 extremists are subjects of interest to MI5 and police, and about 500 plots are being monitored,” he warned in an article in the Mail on Sunday.

With an additional 400 jihadis having returned from Syria, he said the numbers were far too great for them to be monitored by the police and security services.

“The time has come to set up special centres to detain these 3,000 extremists.,” he added.

They should be held in what Mr Ghaffur described as community-based centres, where they would be risk assessed and put through a deradicalisation programme.

These centres would be different from the internment camps set up during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Mr Ghaffur said that they would have the backing of Muslim leaders.

He also urged imams to issue what he described as a collective fatwa condemning terrorist atrocities.

“This would also show that Muslim leaders are doing something to make the UK safe and not just delivering words,” he added.

“I know many will oppose these centres as oppressive. But the threat we face from terrorism is unprecedented and if we do not take bold steps now we will not be able to prevent future attacks.”

As a further safeguard, Mr Ghaffur called for the re-vetting of extremist asylum seekers who, if they were deemed to be a threat, should be expelled.

“We have never faced a terrorism threat like this. So let us have a proper national debate and not be afraid to speak openly for fear of offending any communities, or for the sake of political correctness.”

Cod and parsley stuffed jacket potato

Preparation time less than 30 mins

Cooking time 1 to 2 hours

    Serves 4

Fish pie meets jacket potato in this easy family lunch recipe.

    Ingredients

4 large baking potatoes (roughly 225g/8oz each)
        olive oil
        1 litre/1¾ pint whole milk
        2 garlic cloves, crushed
        1 bay leaf
300g/10½oz cod fillet, skin removed, boneless
3 tbsp roughly chopped fresh parsley
        55g/2oz Cheddar, grated
extra virgin olive oil for drizzling
salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 lemon, cut into wedges, to serve
handful watercress, leaves picked, to serve

    Method

Preheat the oven to 200C/185C Fan/Gas 6. Wash the potatoes well, dry them and prick several times with a fork. Pour some olive oil into your hands and rub over the potatoes. Make four small mounds of sea salt on a baking tray and sit a potato on each one. Bake for 50 minutes–1 hour, or until crispy and cooked.

Meanwhile, for the filling, put the milk, garlic and bay in a saucepan, season and bring to a simmer. Add the cod and cook gently for 4 minutes, then remove from the heat. Lift out the cod using a slotted spoon and place on a plate. Pour the milk mixture into a jug.

Let the potatoes cool slightly, then cut them in half lengthways. Scoop out the flesh and put it in a bowl. Flake the cod and add to the potato. Mix in the parsley. Add 150ml/5fl oz of the milk and mash using a potato masher. Add a little more milk if the mixture is too stiff, but don’t let it become sloppy.

Spoon the flesh back into the potato skins and scatter the cheese on top. Place on a baking tray and bake for 25 minutes, or until piping hot and golden.

Serve immediately, drizzled with a little olive oil, with lemon wedges and watercress.
