And before you ask, it's a copy of the 1949 Esquire prototype..so it should be an interesting final result.

It has a light tru oil finish - when it appears I shall either relic it as is, or shoot a bit of butterscotch on it and relic that...
    dirty boy.
I did say I only might do that.

The other option is to splooge some amber tint on it and dirty that up ;)

Anyway - what you doing in a telecasterish thread?!

Any how, the pics so far indicate an esquire.

    Esquires are awesome.

Cheap bottle of Merlot, too nasty to drink.
Key the surface of the body as if to paint, pour wine all over and simply leave well alone.
It will stain like hell and it will NEVER come off, plus it will always smell like wine.
    (What's not to like?)

    Call it............. L'esquire

    Merlot.

What else are you gonna do with it?
Clean the oil off the driveway?

    Merlot is for sink unblocking.

So as an update: I think I have pretty much everything for a usable esquire build apart from a neck.

It has cost well under £150 so far, and an el cheapo neck will help to keep the price right.

Can't vouch for playability and tone yet, but the 4x2 disastercaster is on its way.

You have no idea how pissed I will be if it's better than the CS Strat. Unlikely, but I'd still be super pissed.

Meanwhile, in my bass version of this thread idea, I have discovered that I could nab a used and fully functional Squier Standard P Bass for less than the anticipated cost of the unloved bits for a project.

Sorry for thread hijack but it seems that lots of us members have parts of guitars that someone could assemble and use as a prize (for example the donate thread of a couple of months ago).  Just struck me on reading this thread, not thought it through fully but I would not be the person to assemble this guitar.  But there are lots of very capable people here who might do the job.
