RAT In a Jack?

What's Hot
DopesickDopesick Frets: 1508
This is pretty insane - ProCo have released a guitar cable with the circuity of the RAT inside of it.

http://pedals.thedelimagazine.com/best-of-snamm-2017-a-rat-distortion-inside-your-guitar-jack/

As per usual I am skeptical but this could be the start of something big...or just a complete disaster waiting to happen.

I'm not seeing how this is better than a rate pedal, other than being fractionally easier to carry. Also, how is it powered?

You'd have to bend down to turn it on then

All very well but have you seen the size of the cable?

I can see two button cells in that photo. 3V SMT opamp and ditch 3 pots for a single switch. Not too difficult to do. But why though?

I don't think manufacturers need to justify what they're coming up with now, invention doesn't necessarily need application. Sometimes it's cool to just do something new.

Id rather see stuff like this than some rehashed tube screamer

If you're someone who literally uses distortion for a few small parts, and doesn't use any other FX then this is a no brainer. I think if they did a boost / klone version they'd fly off the shelves.

I'd be interested in a patch cable with a buffer in it, or a treble / mids / bass boost for those pedals that you would happily have in a loop but are lacking a bit of something.

I'm interested to see what happens (if anything) with this technology.

This is quite Nigel Tufnel.  I just wonder how close we really are to his amplifier capo.

I suppose it's a logical progression from the zoom 902 idea.Great  idea, awkward on a strat type socket but if a straight is available would be great!

  • It's nice to see innovation, but for those who have nagged for years to see more WFR RATs, can't help but feel the money could be better spent on that.

Surely you just use a normal cable between your guitar and the octave and then a rat cable from the octave to the amp or am I missing something?

My concern with this would be based on the average life/durability of a guitar pedal/enclosure vs that of a guitar lead.

Being able to switch it on easily.

Can't see how having to fiddle with the end of a guitar lead mid song, even if plugged into your guitar, constitutes being able to switch on easy.

  • Seems an odd idea. But.....I would try it for fun. A sho would be good though.

It's not a new idea. I remember coming across a site that had instructions for fitting a booster inside one of those thick bodied plugs you often find on speaker cables.
